Kimley-Horn and Associates is an engineering company that offers a wide variety of engineering
services, mostly relating to large scale land development such as airport runways, highways, and
facility management. Incorporating in 1967, the firm has experienced steady growth since then
as more and more specialists joined. Starting in 1990s, ambitious annual and five-year goals
catapulted Kimley-Horn and Associates from an Engineering News & Record ranking of 105 to
33 (Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc., 2010). They strive to create an environment that allows
their employees to flourish and discover untapped talents. Every office has a VP of fun whose
only job is to organize office entertainment, allowing employees to take a few minutes to relax
and enjoy each others company; larger offices may have more than one VP of fun (Ranii,
Kimley-Horns VPs of fun keep things light, 2015). This attitude allowed Kimley-Horn and
Associates to rise to no. 25, from no. 73 last year, in Fortune magazines annual ranking of the
best U.S. companies to work for (Ranii, Kimley-Horn builds nationwide business, helps reshape
the Triangle, 2015). They are aware that their employees are extremely skilled individuals that
dont have to work for them. Many of those individuals became so skilled in their particular
field because they started working at Kimley-Horn and Associates; they pride themselves on
bringing out the best in their employees. In general their ideal candidate would be someone who
makes sure that the customer gets exactly what he or she wants in a timely and efficient manner,
often going the extra mile to make sure that the customer is satisfied. At the same time they also
want someone who can socialize with their fellow employees and have fun. In the case of the
particular position Im applying for, which is an internship opportunity, they are looking for
someone talented who will, hopefully, make a career out of their internship. Given this criteria I
believe that I would be a very good if not ideal candidate for this internship opportunity.
