World Cultures Ukrainian Crisis

1. What are the three core factors that led to the chaos, according to
the article?
One is a broken promise by President Yanukovych of Ukraine by refusing
to sign political trade agreements to integrate Ukraine with the European
Union. The second is a Cold War-era battle between Russia and the
West. Thirdly, the nonstop public outrages and riots over the government
in Ukraine.
2. Why does Russia feel threatened by Ukraine forming a closer
partnership with Europe?
Russia believes that if Ukraine is in partnership with the European Union
it means they are in a partnership against them.
3. Why did many Ukrainians, especially in the Western part of the
country, want Ukraine to sign political and economic agreements
with the European Union?
The Western part of Ukraine is mainly against Russia and their
government so they would do anything to come in agreement with the
European Union. Ukrainians of the West believe Europe is a larger push
to better their lives with needed reforms to their economy and in the
justice system.
4. Why did street protests erupt in November 2013?
Protesters were mad at the legislation and from getting restricted of
their right to freedom of speech. People were beaten by police during
these protests.

5. What were some of the government missteps that helped further

fuel the protests?
Police and authorities fought back with cases of gunfire against the
protesters. Mr. Yanukovych tried to stem violence by firing some of the
government, which did not help. More uproars were in effect from this.
6. What additional questions do you have about whats going on in
Ukraine?
What is their current stand with Russia and the European Union?
