Music Theory I

Course Description:
Music Theory I is a beginning level theory class designed to teach
students the fundamentals of music theory including Clefs, time signatures,
key signatures, and basic chords.
Attendance Policy:
A student will be allowed three unexcused absences. You must make
up all missed assignments on your own time. After the third absence you
will be deducted 5 points from your final grade for every absence. All
illnesses, doctor visits and deaths or serious illnesses of family members will
be excused with proper documentation. Every day will receive 5 points for
participation.
Academic Dishonesty:
Cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, or helping others to commit these
acts will result in a zero on the assignment and a possible failure of the
course.
Disabilities:
In compliance with the ADA, all students with a documented
disability are entitled to reasonable accommodations and services to support
their academic success and safety. Though a request for services may be
made at any time, services are best applied when they are requested at or
before the start of the semester. To receive accommodations and services the
student should immediately contact the Disability Services Coordinator.

Course Objective:
The objective of this course is to develop a strong foundation in music
theory including four part harmony and melodic dictation.
Learning Outcomes:
Be able to easily identify Clefs and notes.
Identify common chords
Analyze four part harmony
Dictate simple melodic rhythms

Required Materials:
Tonal Harmony by Stephen Kostka and Dorothy Payne
A Guide to Music Analysis by Nicholas Cook
Some form of staff paper can be a notebook or hole punched in a
binder
Pencil
Work and attendance:
All missed assignments will due be one class period after receiving
the make-up work. Which must be picked up as soon as possible. Remember
to ask I will not give it to you unless you ask.
Make-up tests must be scheduled outside of class time.

January 12- Syllabus, introduction.
January 14- Staff, Clefs: Treble, Bass, Tenor. How to Read notes.
Work Sheet One Note names 30 Points.
January 16-Note values and how to read and count rhythm. Rhythm
worksheet 30 points.
January 19- Review. Add Key Signatures. Generic Intervals.
Worksheet #2 30 Points.
January 21- Quiz over Clefs, Key Signatures, and Note names. 100
Points. Add Specific Intervals. WS #3 30 points.
January 23- Review Intervals, Note Names, Key Signatures, and
Clefs. WS #4 30 Points.
January 26- Aural Day. WS #5 over intervals. 30 Points
January 28- Quiz Over Intervals, Notes, Clefs, and Key Signatures. 50
points.
January 30- Major Triad. WS #6 Major Triads. 30 Points
February 2- Major and Minor Triads, one Diminished. WS #7 all
white key triads. 30 Points.
February 4- Applying triads to other keys. Intervals between all notes
reviewed. WS #8. 30 Points.
February 6- continue Major: Minor Triads, 7th dim chord. WS #9 30
Points.
February 9- Aural day. Rhythm dictation and interval recognition.

February 11- Review Triads. White scale triads: which ones Major
Minor or diminished. How to make Major, Minor and Diminished triads.
Chord Qualities.
February 13- Test over Triad qualities, writing triads, Key signatures,
and clefs. 100 Points.
February 16- Review test. Aural training for Quiz.
February 18- Aural Quiz over interval recognition and rhythmic
dictation. 100 Points.
February 20- Discuss Inversions. WS # 10 30 Points.
February 23- Aural Training. Homework Analyze simple 4 part
harmony. 20 Points.
February 25- Discuss Part writing rules. WS #11 30 points.
February 27- Review for part writing quiz.
March 2- Part writing quiz 50 points.
March 4- Introduce 7th chords.
March 6- Aural training.
March 9- Talk about seventh chords. Ws#12 30 points.
March 11- seventh chords in inversion. WS#13. 30 points.
March 13- Aural Day.
March 16- Aural review for test on wed.
March 18- Aural Test. 50 points
March 20- Free day. Ask any questions or concerns.
March 23- 27 Spring break.

March 30- Review all concepts.


April 1- Part writing rules for seventh chords.
April 3- Aural day.
April 6- Review all concepts.
April 8- Written or Aural Test. 50 points

April 13- Analyze part writing examples. Homework analyze
examples due Friday.
