Lesson Plan One

LESSON TITLE: Fundations: N

SUBJECT AREA: Fundations (Phonics and Language Arts)

GRADE LEVEL: Kindergarten

TIME ALLOCATION: 50 minutes

OBJECTIVES (with active verbs):


- The kindergarten students will be able to pronounce the letter and its sound for each of our seven letters.
- The kindergarten students will be able to write the letter correctly with the correct letter formation.
- The kindergarten students will be able to self-assess which letter they feel they made the best.
STANDARDS:
- 1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or
speaking.

MATERIALS:

- We have one student on an IEP for some learning
- Baby Echo
disabilities. We also have a few students that have

behavioral issues and trouble staying on task while

ESL students in our classroom. One is from Russia

and the other is from Mexico.

MODIFICATIONS TO MEET INDIVIDUAL STUDENT


NEEDS:
- Use of close proximity for the kids with behavior
issues.
- Use of smaller groups for more one-on-one learning
- Use of Mentor Teacher for support for the ESL
students.

PROCEDURE AND ACTIVITIES

TIME ALLOCATIONS

1. PRE-ACTIVITY: Letter-Keyword-Sound (LTS)


- Introduction of n using the keywords and sounds.

5 minutes

Transition: Chose a student who is sitting quietly to be Baby Echo.


2. ACTIVITY: Drill Sounds
- Say the LTS, have Baby Echo: repeat it, and then have the student
swoop for the class to repeat. Do this for each letter, including the letters
from last week for review.
- I will work with them to construct a web of names that begin with n.
Transition: Have the student sit back down and ask the students to take

10 minutes

out their skywriting finger.


3. ACTIVITY Sky Write/ Letter Formation
- n is a plane line letter. It starts on the (plane line).
-Point to the plane line, go down to the grass line, trace back up to the
plane line, and make a hump.

15 minutes

Transition: I will dismiss the students back to their seats and have the
students set a pencil on their nametag.
4. POST ACTIVITY: Letter Worksheet
- The students will receive a worksheet that will show them how to write
an n. They will trace the letter than write eight examples of the letter on
the lines using finger spaces and the right letter formation.

20 minutes

Closure: The students will self-assess, and then draw something that
begins with an n on the back of the paper.
ASSESSMENT
We will use observations for most of our assessment. The students will self-assess and circle the letter they feel
is the best one out of the eight they wrote. We will come by and put a star next to the one that we feel is the best.
