Topic, class, and level: Forces and Motion Day 4

Essential Question(s): To what important concept, enduring understanding, or big idea in the
discipline does this lesson connect?
What happens when a ramp gets steeper?
Standards: MA, Common Core, WIDA or other Standards for this lesson or unit:
Massachusetts state standards (as seen in the Newton grade 2 unit Ramps: investigating
Forces and Motion):
Tell about why and what would happen if?
Make predictions based on observed patterns
Record observations and data with pictures, numbers, or written statement
Discuss observations with others
Describe the various ways that objects can move, such as in a straight line, zigzag, backand-forth, round-and-round, fast, and slow
Knowledge/Understandings: What should the students know and understand at the end of this
lesson?
The students will be able to understand
That a hypothesis is not always correct and is an educated guess.
That the steeper a platform, the further an object will roll.
Skills: What will the students be able to do when this lesson is over?
The students will be able to
Make predictions, hypothesis, and conclusions on the relationship between steepness and
distance
Record observations from experiment
Assessment:
Were the students able to finish and document the investigation and conclude that when a
car is released on a steeper platform, it will move further?
Materials and/or on-line resources to be used
Forces and Motion Journal (One for each person)
1 Car per group
1 Platform per group
8 Forms per group
1 measuring tape per group
Pencils
Activities
1. (8:40-8:55) Activator- Review what a hypothesis is. Read the Hypothesis Song by the
Science Pirates Song (an affiliate of the New Mexico University). Watch the video:

2.

Last class we looked at different objects that roll and slide. What were some of the
things that slide? Ones that rolled? What characteristics are in common between all the
things that roll/slide?
3. Today we are going to ask ourselves, what happens when the ramp gets steeper. You are
going to go to your station and set up the ramp using 1 block. You will test how far the
car rolls without being stopped. Then you will do the same experiment but with 3 blocks,
and then with 5 blocks. Remember, that you do not want to touch the car as it is moving.
You will then measure how far the car went from the edge of the ramp to the car.
4. These are not toys, but science materials. When a scientist is in a laboratory, they use
their materials in a respectable and mature way
5. Demonstrate the activity as a group. Ask if there are any questions.
6. Some students will not be doing the experiment at this time because of RTI, but they will
do the activity during another time in the day- (Juan Jose, Carlos, Kya, Emma, Vanessa)
7. (8:55-9:20) Activity- 3 groups:
a. Gabe, Haydn, Jordi, Tina
b. James, Ellie, Killian, Shamina
c. Jamani, Drew, Meera, Zeke
8. While the activity is happening, the teacher should be rotating asking follow-up
questions. Ideally there will be a teacher participating with each group.
9. Once the observation is complete, the students should complete the conclusion and the
question section in their packet.
10. (9:20-9:30)- Wrap-Up: Ask for some students to share their conclusions and some new
questions they have.
a. In addition, discuss how their hypothesis was correlated to their conclusion. Was
it correct? Was it wrong? Etc.
11. Clean-up all materials and transition into studying their unit 12 spelling words.

You begin with what you know from observation,
And what you know from things youve seen before.
Then, as you watch and you learn
Ideas begin to turn
Into a questiona thing youd like to know.
Then you form a hypothesis,
A prediction based on questions you have asked.
You have to experiment
And test if you are right.
Its more than just an educated guess.
When you hypothesize, you are predicting
The answer: a question you can test.
With experiments, you know thats how science can show
The way to the answer thats the best.
With each question that you answer
Others questions arise
And once again we hypothesize.
When you hypothesize, you are predicting
The answer to a question you can test.
With experiments, you know thats how science can show
The way to the answer thats the best.
