1. The Topic
a. Topic: the digestive system
b. Setting: fourth grade classroom class size approx. 20-25 students
c. Purpose: part of a science unit on human body systems. This topic is
important because it promotes health and awareness of ones own
body.
2. The Audience
a. Age group: fourth grade
b. Prior knowledge: students have been working on human body unit, and
they know that different organs have different roles in the body. They
know that the digestive system deals food and eating, but this lesson
will teach them about the process of digestion and how food is
absorbed, as well as ways to stay healthy.
c. Geography and culture: the class is an average size suburban
community mostly white, with small minority groups made up of
Hispanic and African American.
d. Special needs: there is a student in the class that is hearing impaired.
For this student the slides would be printed out with teacher
annotations included so that the student would have a written record
of what was said during lecture. The teacher would also wear a
microphone that is connected to the students hearing aid so that the
lecture would be clearer for them to hear.
3. The Objectives
a. Students will be able to accurately label the digestive system from
beginning to end.
b. Students will be able to identify the function of each specific organ
involved in the digestive system.
c. Students will be able to identify ways to promote digestive health.

a. Magic School Bus video the video will be played at the beginning of
the presentation to help engage students and give a quick introduction
to the organs that will be discussed in the presentation/lesson.

b. Follow up activity building the digestive system group work. This
project would be conducted after the completion of the presentation in
order to give students a chance in discuss the information that was just
presented and work with the process in a hands on way.

personal or group expression.
b. 2d communication and collaboration: contribute to project teams to
produce original works or solve problems.
i. Students will demonstrate this in the follow up activity when
they work together to construct the digestive system.

7. Follow-Up Activities
a. Working in groups, students would receive a variety of different
materials and a blank cut out of a human figure. Students would then
manipulate the different materials provided to represent the digestive
system. This activity would reinforce the digestive process as well as
promote creativity and an understanding of what the organs look like.
