Lesson Idea 1. First Grade, English as a Second Language, Character Traits

Lesson Idea 2. First Grade, English as a Second Language, The Pledge of Allegiance
Lesson I Student Project Description of Character Trait Assignment
Students made graphic organizers that represented three main qualities of their favorite characters.
Students generated a topic sentence, three supporting sentences, and closing sentence. Students used
the internet to find three pictures that represented their favorite characters. The final product shows
the title at the top of the paper and their favorite characters name centered in the middle of the page.
The three categories are: Character Name, Picture of Character Trait, and Why this picture was
chosen. The student used this information to write a five sentence paragraph about their favorite
character.
Word processing benefits
Students benefit from word processing projects because it helps them organize and retain character
traits from fiction and non-fictional text. They will remember the graphic that describes the people or
animals in a story. Word processing projects help students to become familiar with creating tables in
Microsoft word and how to use the Internet to upload images. Word processing projects are a great way
to extend any reading lessons across content areas and to increase their English language proficiency
levels.
Lesson 2 Student Project Description of the Pledge of Allegiance Assignment

Student will generate a paragraph that has a topic sentence, three supporting sentences, and a
conclusion sentence. The students will use the internet to find images that help explain the
meaning of the words in the Pledge of Allegiance. Students will include: pledge, allegiance,
republic, indivisible, liberty, and justice. The students final product show the Pledge of Allegiance
title centered in the middle of the page. The students visual aid consists of three columns and six
rows. The three categories on the visual aid are: The Pledge of Allegiance Phrase, Pledge of
Allegiance Pictures and why this picture was chosen.
Word processing benefits
Students will benefit from word processing lessons because it challenges students to present their ideas
in a formal way. Students are able to communicate their thoughts in print and use new content
vocabulary to provide evidence of their learning on any given topic. Many English Language Learners
did not know the words to the Pledge of Allegiance of the United States of America. It was necessary for
students to understand words like: pledge, allegiance, republic and indivisible in order for them
to understand the significance of this American tradition. Students learned how to create tables in
Microsoft Word and to upload pictures found on the Bing website.
