I applied theory and research to family processes through my initial empirical research

done on the effects of family support on those who have disabilities. After learning the immense
success that having support of the family gives, I decided to examine the topic of family
education and support in greater detail, giving me direction and the foundations of my project.
I demonstrated knowledge of optimal individual and family functioning through my
research and understanding of the needs of people with disabilities to utilize different services
over time. By engaging in more varied experiences, a person with disabilities can have a more
thriving life through increasing community inclusion.
My entire project is based off of identifying and evaluating interconnected systems
through creating partnerships across communities, creating a more positive and inclusive social
environment for individuals with disabilities and their families.
Through my project, I have been able to show my interpersonal skills and professional
conduct through building rapport with families, staff and visitors. I have used listening skills by
engaging in active listening, such as when meeting with other ESP staff to get advice before my
fair and speaking with families throughout the process. I also showed interpersonal skills and
professional conduct when communicating on ESPs behalf to potential community partners in
our area, such as businesses and services, during the planning and organization of my Resource
Fair.
I have been able to show my assessment and evaluation skills during my project
development through conducting surveys of ESP families before and after my Resource Fair to
learn more about their direct needs and knowledge gained. I also wrote a research paper on the
topic of family education for my Disability Studies certificate, so I reviewed literature for that.
I have shown my writing and materials development skills through creating fliers and
assisting in design work for the promotion of my fair. My materials development skills were
even further shown through my creation of the Resource Brochure and Booklet as part of my

project. ESP is excited to have these professional and sustainable resources available for their
continued use.
I have shown my skills in planning and organization through the entire process of
planning, implementing, and coordinating a Resource Fair event for ESP families for my project.
I developed a timeline, check list, contacted businesses, coordinated the event, secured a
location, secured a food donation, coordinated set up and clean up, worked and maintained the
event on my own, and organized families who attended. My event received consistent praise
from families and businesses that attended as well as ESP staff!
