Class Observation
A competent teacher must know the resources, methods and needs of students
to work in the classroom. In this essay are some data collected after the observation of
a kinder class. The school visited was Wesleyan Academy in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. I
visit Kinder 3 the homeroom teacher is Mrs. Jennifer Cruz and the assistant is Mrs.
Soneliz Santos.
All areas and object are labeled in Spanish and English. There are 26 students
thirteen girls and thirteen boys. The classroom have five tables with chairs adapt to the
kids. The tables are located in a "U" form facing the electronic board. At the top of the
board is the english alphabet with illustrations. They have a magnet calendar at the left
of the board and underneath the numbers from 1 to 100. The walls are decorated
according to the season and topic learning. Some of the childrens work are exposed to
parents to see. The room has two bathrooms, one for girls and one for boys and air
conditioning.
The themes discussed in class are varied and the text book is used has
reference. During the time I was visiting the theme was "My books and I". The activities
are centered in the creation of a book using the workbook of the class. The teacher
reads a story to present the letter for them to learn. After that, to stimulate the writing,
they made a page from the workbook. Kids also use clay to create a letter to develop
psychomotor skills.
The class begins with a song routine and then the teacher writes on the
blackboard the date. Then, the teacher stands in the front of the class and reads the

story about the letter of the day. To capture their attention she asked questions about
the book like what the story may be, what they think about the title before they make
their predictions. The stories presented are in a text book and in a power point
presentation.
The teacher maintains an active participation during class. Some of the activities
in class were: drawing a part of the story, created a book with the pages, they were
asked questions then read the contents with the teacher also tracing letter, using clay
they created their own jewelry and presented to their peers. The teacher uses the
specific book for the class but also bring other book stories as resources.
The classroom teacher is not limited to textbook. She uses the literacy approach
method involving children in class. The teacher has an interesting attractive way to
teach the class so that children do not feel they are learning. They play along and feel
essential in every part of it.
