Biological illustrations are a critical means by which scientists
from a variety of disciplines can clearly and effectively
communicate anatomical and morphological features,
biological processes, genetic and phylogenetic relationships,
and many more phenomena that are characteristic of organisms.
Due to the highly diverse nature of concepts encompassed,
multiple artistic techniques are necessary to successfully
communicate these concepts. For example, a botanist may
require an illustration that clearly shows the basic structure
of vegetative and reproductive features of a plant. Under
such circumstances, it would be inappropriate to provide a
watercolor illustration when a simple pen and ink illustration
to show the diagnostic characters would suffice. Knowledge
of artistic techniques and when they are appropriate enhances
communication of complex topics within the scientific
community. A carefully rendered illustration can often
more clearly indicate important diagnostic characters than a
photograph. To demonstrate the consideration that must be
given to planning and illustrating a variety of organisms,
I have produced multiple pieces of artwork for each of
the following scientific illustration techniques: graphite,
pen-and-ink, color (watercolor and mixed media), digital,
and overall design. These techniques allow for enhanced
communication and invite the general populace to explore
the wonders of the natural world.
