PERSONAL LEADERSHIP VISION
SITUATION: Leaders are confronted with building a shared vision for an organization. However, it is the
responsibility of all members of an organization to create and carry out a vision for the future. The
challenge in creating a shared vision is to create a sense of purpose that binds people together and
propels them to fulfill their deepest aspirationsthe discipline of building shared vision is centered around
a never-ending process, whereby people in an organization articulate their common storiesaround vision,
purpose, values, why their work matters, and how it fits in the larger world 1. To create vision, leaders
must first articulate their personal vision. Then, their personal vision statement evolves into a sense of the
organizations shared vision. Finally, the leader compares the shared vision with the current realities of the
organization.
ASSIGNMENT: Your task is to articulate your personal vision by addressing all of the following categories.
1. Self-image: If you could be exactly the kind of person you wanted, what would your qualities be?
What steps will you take to become this person?
2. Health: What is your desire for health and fitness? How will you attain this vision?
3. Relationships: What types of relationships would you like to have with friends, family, spouse,
and others?
4. Career: What is your ideal professional or career situation? What are the organizations with which
you need to contact to attain this situation? Who are the people you need to network or work with
to achieve this situation?
5. Personal pursuits: What would you like to create in the arena of individual learning, travel,
reading, or other activities?
6. Financial: What is your vision for your financial future? What salary do you desire? How much
will you save? How much debt are you willing to incur? What steps will you take to get there?
7. Leadership: What is your vision for leadership? How do you view leadership? What leadership
path will you choose? What experiences do you need to achieve this?
8. Philanthropic Ideals: Where would you like to give back to the community? In the next years
would you like to give with your time, money, leadership skills? What organizations do you want to
work with?
9. Lifes purpose: Imagine that your life has a unique purpose fulfilled through what you do, your
interrelationships, and the way you live. Describe that purpose, as another reflection of your
aspirations.
Your vision is yours! Feel free to use any format or delivery method that best expresses your personal
vision. Please note that if objects are used, a description is necessary to provide the instructors with
adequate information for grading. There are no correct answers for this assignment. You will be evaluated
in three capacities for this project: Presentation of Vision, Written Description, and Creativity.
