Content Outline:
Summary: the brief statements of the main points of a text
Rationale:
This will help the students when they are reading to expand their
comprehension. It will also help them in conversing to others. It is
important for the students to be able to be able to recall the main
points of a text. It is important for the students to learn this skill so that
they can be self-sufficient.
Objectives:
SWBAT create summarizes from texts. (fiction)
Lesson Opening:
Ask the students what they know about summarizing. How do
you summarize? Why do you summarize? When do you use a
summary?
Tell the students that today we will be working on summarizes
from conversations.
Connection:
The students can make connections to reading and writing when
finding the important details. Learning these skills will help them
become better readers and writers, so they can connect these skills
when they are working in the classroom or at home on reading or
writing. They can also make connections to every day life because they
will be able to summarize conversations and directions.

Instructional Strategies:
Whole group til 2:20
As a class we will learn the process to write a summary for a
conversation.
Then the students will be put in pairs and given a conversation
starting points.
They will begin with personal. This is similar to an interview; the
person asking the questions will write down the answers and vice
versa.
Then they will write a summary on their person.
Caldwell Group til 2:45
Then these students will continue with another conversation.
They will choose a topic listed on the sheet. After the interview
they will write their summary.
Early finishers: study for word study, science items, read
Word Study til 3:15

Ask the students what we worked on today and how it will help
them in their lives
Tell the students to clear off their desk and get ready for word
study
