My objective as an elementary school teacher is to create life long learners out
of my students. My focus in the classroom is critical thinking and problem solving. As
a woman that has worked many jobs, unrelated to teaching, I have used these skills in several different scenarios. I attain my goal of creating life long learners by curating hands on activities, group work and challenging my students to strive for excellence. Problem solving and critical thinking are so important to hold because they are tools that will be used throughout my students life in a job, at home or while furthering their education. In my classroom I create life long learners, first by setting a high standard for all of my students. What I expect is from them is to come prepared to actively participate in classroom discussions or activities. I also expect the best work out of all of them. I believe that if I actively and openly show my expectations, the students will not want to let me down. Therefore I get a better result out of my classroom grades and communication. Second, I create life long learners by giving out several group activities as an assignment. Group work often forces my students to share their ideas and thoughts with other classmates. I believe that elementary students are so creative and when their minds are put together, the sky is the limit! A fun part of my job is grading the exciting projects that my students write down, draw or build together in a group activity. Most importantly I ask my students to DO! A student at any age does not simply learn by being told, they learn by practicing. My class does not consist of a lecture, it consists of doing activities like hands on math problems, art and sports. This holds my students attention longer than if I were to stand in front of the class and talk for an hour or so. Therefor, creating life long learners via hands on activities. I want my students to be able to further themselves in life using the skills I taught them in elementary school. I teaching them problem solving, critical thinking and group work, all things that will be used every day in their adult life. My objective as an elementary school teacher is to create life long learners, I strive to accomplish this every year with new students each time.
