For our MWA and all the LSAs before it we are focusing on the
rhetorical analysis of a trailer of a movie that hasnt come out yet. I
chose the movie Age of Adeline. The rhetorical situation that I would
want to write is for a website. I would want people to be able to search
and see the broken down appeals and patterns of this movie. My
audience for this piece I would like to be male and female. The ages
would be between 14-50. I wanted to do both male and female
because I would like anyone that may be interested in the movie to be
able to see my analysis and decide for themselves if they want to
watch it or not.
Writing this paper was easy for me. The outline that we did for
LSA 4 really helped me organize and write this MWA. What really
surprised was that after watching the trailer for the 100th time I was
able to see more examples of appeals and patterns. I didnt have a
hard time writing this paper.
The SLO that I used while I was writing this paper was SLO D. To
improve my fluency in my sentences I would look up synonyms for
words that I used too often. I would also arrearage my words in
sentences to make the sentence sound better. I know this SLO will help
me in my other classes because in most of my other classes I have to
write papers and I would want my paper to sound fluent.

I would like feedback on the structure of my paper. I would also

like feedback on my thesis and if it was well developed. I would want to
know if I explained the appeals and patterns well enough for my
audience to understand.

RhetoricalAnalysis
ThetrailerforthenewmovieAgeofAdelineisaboutayounggirlwhowasborn
inthe1920s.Adelineisjustanormalgirllivinganormallife.Onedayshegetsintoa
horribleandcaraccident,somethingunnaturalhappensandshebecomesimmortal.Her
immoralitycauseshertoliveonintopresenttime.Thetrailershowsmanyexamplesof
therhetoricalappealsandtherhetoricalpatterns.Thegenreofthismovieisromantic
dramasoweknowthatthemainrhetoricalappealwouldbetheappealtoemotion.The
rhetoricalpatternsandtheappeals,pathosandlogos,helpcapturetheaudiences
attentionandmaketheaudiencemoreinterestedinthemovie.Theintendedaudienceis
youngerteengirlstomiddleagedwomen,betweentheagesof1465.Ithinkthatthisis
theaudiencethatwouldenjoyamoviewiththisstructureandgenre.
Thelogosareshownwhenyoulookatthetrailerasawhole.Mostpeoplethink
thatmoviesintheromanticgenreareverysimilar.Thesemoviesarealikeinsomeways
buttheyarealsouniqueindifferentways.Mostmovieswiththesamegenrehavethe
samestructure.InthepreviewofAgeofAdelineittellsthestoryofAdeline,themain
character,itgivesbriefbackstoryandshowsyouhowAdelinebecomesimmortal.The
trailerthengoesintothestoryafterherimmortalityandhowshesuffersthroughloveand
loss.Ifeelthatthistrailerhasthesamestructureasatrailerofthesamegenre.The
structureofanothermoviewouldhavethesameloveandlossfeel.Lookingatthetrailer
asawholeyoucanseethatthemovieisalsouniqueanddiffersfromothermoviesand
trailersofitsgenre.InthismovieAdelinebecomesimmortal,moviesofthesamegenre
dontnormallyhavesupernaturaloccurrence.ThissetsAgeofAdelineapartfromallthe

othersimilarmovies.Theseexampleoflogosfallunderthepatterndescription.There
wasacomparisonbetweenthismovieandmoviesofthesamegenre.Theselogosare
veryimportantbecauseitgivestheaudienceanideaofwhatthemoviecouldbeabout,
butkeepsthemguessingencouragingthemtoseethemovie.
ThemainrhetoricalappealthatisshownthroughoutthepreviewofthemovieAgeof
Adelineispathos.Thismovieappealstotheemotioninmanyways.Oneexampleof
emotionthroughoutthetrailerissadness.SinceAdelinebecomesimmortalsheisforced
towatchherfamilygrowoldwhilesheremainsyoung.Adelinecannotletanyonelove
herorletanyoneintoherlifebecauseshedoesntwantpeopletoknowhersecret.She
cantletamanloveherbecauseshecantgrowoldwithhim.Therhetoricalpatternthat
sadnesswouldfallintowouldbecauseandeffect.Sheissadbecausesheisimmortaland
hastowatchherfamilygrowoldwithouther.Inthepreviewitshowsthelonelinessthat
Adelinehas.Adelineisalwaysontherun,runningawayfrompeopleofherpast.She
cantloveorletanyoneintoherlifebecauseofherimmortality.Theseappealsto
emotionhavethepatterncauseandeffect.Becausesheisimmortalthiscauseshertobe
lonelyandsad.Themainpathothatisdisplayedthroughoutthetrailerislove.Adeline
hasmassiveamountsofloveforherdaughters.Shelovesthemandwillalwayslove
them.Shemakesitveryclearinthetrailer.ThereisalsosomelovehintsinwithHarrison
Fordsyoungerself.ThetraileronlygivesashortdisplayofHarrisonFordscharacters
youngerselfandAdelinehavinganintimatemoment.WhenAdelineseethenowolder
HarrisonFordyoucanseethehintofloveandhurtthatcouldbethere.Therhetorical
patternthatlovefallsintoisnarrative.Loveiswhatthewholestoryisbasedon.

ThepreviewforthemovieAgeofAdelinehastwomainrhetoricalappeals,which
arepathosandlogos.Therearemanyexamplesofthemthroughoutthemovieandthisis
whatgrabstheaudiencesattention.Themainrhetoricalappealispathos.Thepreviewis
filledwithloveandsadnessthatthisexpressedthroughallthecharacters.Therearealso
manyrhetoricalpatternsthatcorrespondenhancetheappeals.Thismovieisallabout
loveandloss.Iamreallyexcitedtoseethisfilm.
