Improving the Euro Area


Economic Governance
Mr Jean-Claude Trichet, Chairman, Group of Thirty; Board of Directors, Bruegel Institute

SYNOPSIS Despite its resilience in the worst financial crisis since

World War II the Euro area displayed several weaknesses which must be
corrected. Mr Trichet will argue that the crisis developed in three
episodes, and will give six reasons as to why the epicentre of the crisis was
located in the Euro area. He will end by providing his views as to what
Europes leaders can do in order to bring an end to the crisis and improve
economic governance in the Eurozone.
SPEAKER Jean-Claude Trichet is presently chairman of the Group

of Thirty (Washington), chairman of the Board of Directors of Bruegel


Institute and chairman of the Trilateral Commission (Europe). He is a
member of the Institut de France (Acadmie des Sciences Morales et
Politiques). Trichet is a graduate of the Ecole nationale suprieure des
Mines de Nancy, of the Institut dtudes politiques de Paris, of the
Universit de Paris (in economics) and of the Ecole nationale
dadministration. In 1987 Trichet became a member of the Group of
Thirty and later its chairperson. He was governor of Banque de France
from1993-2003, elected as Chairman of the Group of Ten (G10) in
2003, and served as President of the European Central Bank from 2003
to 2011. He was appointed as chairman of the Board of Directors of
Bruegel Institute in April 2012.
