Carroll, Andrew. "An American missionary describes 'beastly' atrocities in Nanking." World War
II July-Aug. 2012. Gale Biography In Context. Web. 20 Apr. 2015.
This article shows the perspective of an American missionary, who had seen the brutal
undertaking the Japanese had committed. The Japanese left a path of destruction for this city to
pick up. Whether it was their valuables, possessions,or courage, the victims of that city had lost
something. Throughout the city, soldiers gave the feeling of compassion to the people who lost
loved ones and now carry only what is on their backs. Andrew Carroll dedicates this article to the
lives ruined that horrible day. To prevent this kind of history to be made in the future, a
memorial should show information from the views of the soldiers in tribute to the huge society
that was lost in Nanking.
Ferguson, Evan. "The Rape of Nanking. a Video Journey." YouTube. YouTube, 2 Nov. 2011.
Web. 22 Apr. 2015.
Videos of chinese people being hospitalized taught me how brutal the Japanese were. As
more cases were happening to men, women, and children, the media was to focus on the big
world war happening in the European countries with Hitler. The examples of torment the
Japanese left on the people through the Chinese cities and the damage will disable and scar them
for the rest of their lives. A memorial should dedicate to the civilians of Nanking to show the
agony they went through, but to give them the identity they deserve.
Halpin, Dennis P. "'The June 4th Incident'; Tiananmen Square and truth-telling." The Weekly
Standard 9 June 2014. Gale Biography In Context. Web. 20 Apr. 2015
This magazine article shows the impact on Japanese history and the denial they have over
the cause of the horrible massacre through Nanking. The article explains how Japan does not

look to the past anymore. They deny the seizing of the city and the people within it. People today
in these countries are being censored from the truth, and not having freedom. A memorial should
be displayed for the evidence of this event happening to unveil the truth to japanese individuals
instead of something where others can just glance in a textbook.
Jones, Adam. "Gendercide Watch: The Nanjing Massacre." Gendercide Watch: The Nanjing
Massacre. N.p., 2013. Web. 22 Apr. 2015.
This website was to show the deliberate mass murdering of the Chinese race. Japan saw
China to be a barrier in becoming an imperialist and expanding country. Early societies like the
Nazi parties had a similar idea for the extermination of the Jewish civilians, and now the
japanese had unleashed a mass gendercide to the race of China, which was spread across the
country not just to Nanking. A memorial should have this type of information because the
Holocaust is seen today as one of the biggest genocides of the world. Unfortunately, the history
of the Nanking massacre is not acknowledge by other countries like the Holocaust is.
Snyder, Cydney. "Rape of Nanking Documentary." YouTube. YouTube, 19 Mar. 2013. Web. 22
Apr. 2015.
This video views how Japan thought that the race of China had to be punished because
they didnt worship the Japanese god. As Japanese sent their entire army to conquer the country,
they punished thousands of Chinese men, women, and children. They made people suffer for
surrendering because in Japanese society, honor is everything. From raping people to burning
down buildings, the japanese were brutal to this entire race just by the differences they have. A
memorial should present how cruel the Japanese actually were. It makes the audience feel awful
for what these individuals had to undergo.

History Place - Genocide in the 20th Century: Rape of Nanking 1937-38. The History
Place, 2000. Web. 22 Apr. 2015.
This journal has an article that analyzes the assembly of the Japanese army and how they
crossed into the Chinese borders murdering thousands of people in the Nanking region to convert
to their empire. It brands the Nanking Massacre as being a genocide because the city was a mass
murder of men, women, and children. Surrender was not an option for the Japanese; Hence, their
culture of individuals without honor are weak and cowardly. Japanese found this as a victory for
their imperial army and celebrated the conquering of the city. This viewpoint of Japan would be
valuable in the memorial to display that during this time period, the only thing Japan was
determined to do was to expand their population and rule all around Eastern Asia.
Unknown. "Nanjing Massacre." History.com. Ed. A&E Television Networks, 2015.
Web. 22 Apr. 2015.
This website shows how the mistake of a nationalist leader led to so many lives lost by
Japans army.Chinese nationalist leader, Chiang Kai-Shek, had the idea of sending out all the
Chinese troops outside of the city. A population of defenseless people were to either flee from the
city or stay to encounter with their enemies. Also given the name Rape of Nanking because
women and occasionally men would be raped by Japanese soldiers as they would sweep through
the city. The memorial should have a piece of evidence like this to show that there was another
effect to the event of Nanking by the poor judgment of a leader.
