COMPETENCIES

Administrators are given guidelines or competencies to assist them in their leadership.

The nine competencies have helped me to understand the criteria needed to be a successful
administrator.
The first competency is for the administrator to know how to shape a campus culture by
facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of
learning that is shared and supported by the school community. I have always believed that it
takes a village to raise a child. I feel this competency is comparable to that statement. The
administrator is lead teacher that facilitates the school community working together to guarantee
success of our students.
The second competency is that the administrator should know how to communicate and
work with all the members of the school community and meet the needs of all involved. As an
administrative intern, I have lead a campus development, a sixth grade PLC, and presented a
power point to the administrative team. These activities have assisted me on my journey to
becoming a successful administrator and advocate for the staff and students.
The third competency is that an administrator act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical
and legal manner. During this school year, I have sat in on several ARDs, 504 meetings, and
parent conferences. Some of these meeting have run very smoothly, but there have been a few
that I have had to stop and think how I would handle it as an administrator. In one particular
situation, I would have handled the situation differently than my principal. The parent was
somewhat belligerent towards the teacher. The administrators sat there while the parent was
disrespectful to the teacher. If I was the administrator, I would have stop the meeting and stated
to the parent that I understand he is upset but hitting tables and yelling at staff will not help to

solve the problem. I feel that teachers as well as students and community members need to be
treated with fairness and integrity.
The fourth competency is how to facilitate the design and implementation of curriculum
and strategy plans that assist in teaching and learning. I feel that this competency may be the
most important. Administrators must identify appropriate materials that will help teachers deliver
the needed information to the student with the most amount of rigor and relevance. I have
worked on this competency by creating material such as test and vocabulary quizzes for my
science department.
The fifth competency is to be an advocate for the students and staff as well as provide a
nurturing instructional program and campus environment. I feel that I am continually trying to
be an inspiration to my students and coworkers. I try to always have a smile and greet everyone
as well as treat everyone with respect. I feel that teachers and administrators must be nurturing
people to help lift our students to the highest level of learning.
The sixth competency is for the administrator to implement staff evaluation and develop
ways to assist staff members in their personal growth. Ways that administrators can assist in the
personal growth of the faculty is by staff development. This school year, I have present a few
staff developments. One of my presentations was over CHAMPs. After the training, I had several
people coming to me to say that they really enjoyed the presentation and were eager to see more
presentations from me. My assistant principal and mentor stated that she felt I did a great job
and that she too had several staff members excited our implementing CHAMPs and the
presentation. Through these staff development presentations, I feel that I have grown as a
teacher and future administrator.

COMPETENCIES

Competency seven is for an administrator to apply skills such as organization, decisionmaking, and problem-solving to improve the learning environment and campus. As an
administrative intern, I was able to apply competency seven while organizing a school carnival.
I had to make decision regarding staff placement at the carnival. I also had to problem solve all
the issues that arose during the carnival process.
The eighth competency is to apply principles of effective leadership and management in
relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial management, and
technology use. I feel this is probably my weakest area. My campus administration is closed
when discussing financial matter. I believe this be a much needed area of need for me to learn
about.
The ninth and final competency is the principal knows how to apply principals of
leadership and management to the campus and support systems to ensure a safe and effective
learning environment. I feel that competency nine is my strongest area. I believe that my
personality is best suited with the discipline areas. As a daughter of a veteran and deputy sheriff
and widow of a veteran, I feel that my life has been surrounded by structure, discipline,
following the rules, and safety. I have also been a behavioral specialist for the school district, in
which I worked with students that were emotionally disturbed. I was one of the first employees
for the district to implement a behavior program which focused on positive intervention. I feel
that all I will excel in the competency nine.
As I reflected on all nine of the competencies, I have identified my areas of strength and
weakness. As I continue to work on my future in administrator and shadow my mentor, I believe
I will continue to grow as an administrator so that I can be the example and the best lead teacher
on my campus.
