ENG 102- Prof. Parker
Factory Farming Political Cartoon
This political cartoon presents the argument of how
animals are treated in factory farms. Where they are
mass-produced and kept in ammonia filled cages
that irritates the animals bodies. These animals are
kept in artificial light or even blackout rooms in
order to control their behavior and growth. The
animals are injected with hormones to stimulate
growth, which results in chronic pain, mobility and
heart problems. In order for these animals to survive
they are fed antibiotics to maintain their health. In
factory farms, many of the female animals spend
their entire lives pregnant, placing them under an
extreme strain. The chicken in the cartoon is a
perfect example of the how these animals are treated and expected to produce quality
products. While they are being injected with chemicals and put into an extreme unnatural
environment. These animals live short lives due to their small organs becoming unable of
sustain their heavy size. Many of the animals that are slaughtered are still babies due to
this short life span. Not only are these factory farms torturing their animals, but the
environment is also affected by the harmful pollution created. These farm factories even
endanger consumer health due to their unsanitary animal housing. They are breeding
grounds for salmonella and E. Coli, which was rarely an issue with traditional farming.
Bacteria is constantly evolving, which means factory farms must inject their animals with
even more antibiotics to keep them from becoming susceptible to the diseases. Antibiotic
abuse is a dangerous thing; it develops super bacteria that is drug- resistant and spread
from animals to humans. I agree with this political cartoon because it expresses the
unfortunate reality of these animals lives and the quality product they are expected to
produce, an unrealistic desire. For these animals cannot produce healthy products because
of their poor health. These selfish factory farms should care for their animals and
consumers health. The solution to this problem is government intervention, no longer
should they turn a blind eye to this issue. For it will soon become an epidemic of
unhealthy animals and meat eaters. If we put this unhealthy food into our bodies we are
only promoting this abuse and consumer disrespect. Lastly, the talk bubble of the chicken
saying, Consider it payback, followed by an egg with a toxic skull and bones symbol
expresses the attitude I hold towards these farm factories because if they are treating their
animals like garbage they should not be able to reap the benefits of a quality product, but
given a product equal to the standard of living these animals endured.
