Marketed as a noninvasive
face-lift, HydraFacial reduces
fine lines and wrinkles and
plumps up the skin. This
spring its emerging as the
go-to facial for Hollywood
A-listers and local celebs.

Would Elizabeth get one?

I tried it twice: once at the

Rittenhouse Spa & Club and
another at Suede Salon, Spa,
and Body. I was amazed to see
how icky the water was in
both vials, but I did leave with
glowing skin and went
foundation-free for a few days
post procedure. Its worth
mentioning that I have
sensitive skin especially
around my chin and it
wasnt at all red or inflamed.
However, I was far from
relaxed. I was wincing the
whole time.

Wheres it come from?

The HydraFacial has its

roots in microdermabrasion, a
type of exfoliation developed in
the 1980s that removes the
outer layer of skin with
crystals, resulting in lightened
pigment patches and smoothed
wrinkles. In 1985, Roger Ignon
and Bill Cohen founded Edge
Systems, the company behind
the first patented
microdermabrasion system.
Today, microdermabrasion
albeit harsh on the skin and
time-consuming is a staple
in many aestheticians offices.
Fast forward 20 years, and
Edge Systems develops the
HydraFacial that uses a wand
to apply serums that seep into
the face and cleanse, exfoliate,
peel, extract blackheads, and
moisturize.
Within the last 10 years, the
once tabletop mechanism has
grown to toddler-size, and it
includes a see-through vial that
allows customers to see all the
guck removed from their skin.
NewBeauty magazine ranked it
the best in-office treatment for
