Sanitary Procedures & Standard Precautions

I.

Cleaning, Sanitizing and Disinfecting

A.

Cleaning involves using a bleach solution of 1/4 cup of bleach to 1

gallon of water to wash items such as toys, high chairs, cribs, strollers,
etc. This should be done often to reduce the spread of disease. A new
bleach solution must be made daily to maintain it's strength.

B.

Sanitizing is a two step process which involves using a bleach

solution of 1/4 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water to wash items. Then
the solution is used again and left to air dry. It is necessary to sanitize
all food surfaces after meals.

C.

Disinfecting involves using a stronger solution of 1 tablespoon of

bleach to 1 cup of water to spray onto items. The soiled area should
first be cleaned with soap and water. Then sprayed with the bleach
solution. The solution should remain on the surface for at least 2
minutes before they are wiped. Items that must be disinfected after
each use are changing tables, potty chairs and mats.

D.

All cleaning solutions must be kept in spray bottles labeled

(general cleaning, disinfection) Labels must be dated and labeled
with bleach ratio.

Universal/Standard Precautions
A.

Universal/Standard Precautions are a set of practices used to protect

employees. They are required by OSHA in any workplace environment.
These precautions were created to protect teachers/employees from
accidental exposure to blood or bodily fluids that might contain
infectious disease. The practices are as follows:
1.

Wear disposable gloves when you might be in contact with bodily fluids
or blood.

2.

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.

3.

Dispose all contaminated materials in the proper containers.

4.

Clean all surfaces with disinfecting solution.
