    theJewelwasthefirstmajorplaytodrawontraditionalYorubapoetry,music,anddancetotella
    NigerianstoryinEnglish.TheplayenabledNigeriandramatobecomepartofworldtheater.
    TheLionandtheJewelisacomedysetinthesmallremotevillageofIlujinle.Therearethreecentral
    characters:Lakunle,aneagerbutnaveschoolteacherwhoacceptsWesternideasandmodernitywithout
    reallyunderstandingthemBaroka,thevillagechief,whoseesmodernideasasathreattohispowerand
    Sidi,thejewelofthevillage,abeautifulwomanwhowillchooseoneofthemenforahusband.The
    charactersareexaggerated:Lakunleisarrogantandtalkstoomuch,andBarokaiscunning,buttheyare
    ultimatelylikable.UnlikemanyofSoyinkaslaterplays,thereisnoevilinthisplay,andtheauthor
    pokesonlygentlefunathischaracters.Intheend,themenwillhavetodealwitheachother.AsBaroka
    says,theoldmustflowintothenew.
    TheplayfocusesonseveralconflictsthatSoyinkapresentsbutdoesnotattempttoresolve.Lakunleand
