Objective(s)

SWBAT: Connect words or stanzas to determine


imagery types and tone.
SWBAT: Annotate poem considering both imagery
and the tone of the poem to determine the meaning
of the poem.

Students will state another form of imagery or


statement that they could be rising from within
their lives utilizing their own personal experiences

as they are used in the text, including figurative and
connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative

(e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and
place; how it sets a formal or informal tone).

Give excerpt of visual imagery
from a poem and go over as a
class what this kind of imagery

Give an excerpt of auditory imagery from a


poem . Have students point out the clues
that show its an auditory imagery

imagery and go over it as a class.
Have students point out clues for
this imagery as well.

imagery and go over it as a class,
having students determine clues.

Give an excerpt of this kind of


imagery and go over it as a class,
have students come up to board
and circle clues for gustatory
imagery

Give out worksheet with different


small stanzas from poems that are
paired to the different types of
imagery. Have students work in
pairs and write down which
Imagery goes with each stanza.
They must circle the clues that
helps them determine the type of
imagery.

Give students a simple poem and


have them write down the
different forms of Imagery present
throughout the poem. They should
provide at least one type of
imagery present in the poem,
marking the clues in the text that
determines what type of imagery
is present.

Have students read the poem


silently and then have a student
read the poem aloud.

Have students come up to the


smart board and highlight
meaningful words that could be
useful in trying to decipher
meaning and underline clues that
can help point to the imagery of
the poem.

Put the class in small groups and


have them go over stanzas within
the poem and decide what kind of
imagery is being used

Come back together as a class


and have a person from each
group report out to class and write
on the smart board showing the
class what kind of imagery they
saw and why they chose that
imagery.(clues)

Have them go back into groups


and utilize both the annotating
from earlier and the imagery
found to decipher the meaning of
the poem.

We will have a small open


dialogue about the poem and
what the poem means. We will
talk about what the author is
rising from and how that can
relate to us as a class.
Questions to discuss:
1. What is Maya Angelou rising
from?
2. What did your groups come up
with for the meaning of the
poem?
3. Think of the time in which the
poem was written, how does
her tone and meaning correlate
with the era this poem was
written in?

Have the class go home and read


over the poem again. Students will
write there own small stanza
stating what they have rose from
in their lives and try to use one
form imagery.
