Lesson 9 Data Exchange

(Student Book B Pg 11 - 14)

Starter What is the role of a CODEC? What is a CODEC another name for?
It stands for compressor, decompress. It is the mathematical way to transfer light and sound into packets
to send over the internet.
1. Explain what VoIP stands for and how it works.
VoIP stands for voice over Internet protocol. VoIP is a group of internet protocols that provides a way
of sending voice and multimedia communication over the internet, rather than by public telephone
networks, i.e., Skype.
2. There are three transmission modes used in communication, these are shown in the
diagram below. Explain what each is and how it operates.

Transmission Mode

Description
It is a one way transmission, for example a Broadcasting tower broadcasting
Waves to your TV.

Simplex
You have to wait for the other person to finish speaking before you can
Start to speak, for example a walkie talkie.
Half Duplex
It is a transmission where both people can speak at the same time, for
example a phone
Duplex (Full Duplex)

3. The table below shows the main transmission methods that are used. Complete the table
to find out the key details, benefits and limitations of each.

Wired
Type
Cable used

UTP / STP
Coaxial
Unshielded twisted pair / One thick strand of
Shielded twisted pair.
copper wire

Max Speed

250Mpbs

1000Mpbs

Fibre Optic
Glass or plastic cables
That use total internal
Reflection of light to
Transmit data.
2.4Gbps

Max Distance

100meters

100meters

50Km

Benefits

Twisting cancels out

Some inference.

Fast and reliable.

V fast
Works over long distance
Little interference

V low cost
Limitations

Slower and less capacity Costs more than UTP/

Than other cables.
STP.

Complex connection and

termination equipment.

Example of use

Local area wired networks.Connection to cable TV

Networks e.g. Virgin
Analogue telephone
Media.
Networks.
Connection between
Arial / dish and TV.

Cable networks use

Fibre from their source
To distribution panels
In the street. From there
They use coaxial cable
To individual households.

Cable used

Infrared
Short range data transMission using infra-red
Light (just beyond visible
Light) this is the same
Technology as used in
TV remotes).

Microwave
Short wavelength radio
Transmission working
At frequencies.

Satellite
Satellite-(high frequency,
1 to 50 GHz range, radio
Signals) data transmitted from
earth to satellite which
Relays it back to earth to
Relevant receiving station.

Max Speed

4Mbps

300 Gbps

Huge

Max Distance

100m

100meters

Benefits

Tends to be reliable.

Lose cables

Between 500km to
36000km
Can increase the
Distance a network
Can reach.

With satellite signal

Degrades very little
Over long distances.
Limitations

Requires direct line of

Sight.

Can be affected by rain,

Pollen and sun spot
Activity.

Expensive

Can suffer from external

Interference.
