Reflection Essay

Throughout the semester, 113B has taught me a numerous amount of skill and tips that
have helped develop my writing as a writer. The objective of the class is to demonstrate
competence in university writing, the ability to use rhetorical strategies that include the appeal to
audience, logic, and emotion and the ability to use library and online resources effectively. My
personal goal as a writer throughout this semester was to challenge my writing to met the
university writing standard. Three main assignments that have shaped my writing and have
taught valuable lessons are project text,space and web. My portfolio will show you how three
assignment have enlightened me about writing and devolved my writing.
Project text focuses on how images and words are used to convey a certain idea. With this
project, it taught me as a writer that by using particular words or even writing in a certain tone,
my writing can be perceived a particular way. As a developing writer the biggest lesson we learn
through project text is how simple actions such as the authors choice/creation of a cover is not
solely to make their writing attract individuals,but are trying to convey a message already. An
example of this would be through the graphic novel Batman: The Dark Knight Return by Frank
Miller. This author exemplifies how even in a comic book form such writing can be complex.
How certain pictures is tied into words and vice versa. How colors can be used to convey a
certain emotion or message. Such as red can be compared to blood and black to darkness and
evil. Project text help me as a developing writer by teaching me to use the book and the text to

create a visual image to the audience. By using a graphic novel it, made me focus on the text and
how Frank Miller used small phrases that made me as a writer do more research.
Project space concept was about how our surrounding and environment affect us our way
of convey a certain idea,tone and even actions. An example of this would be our assignment
which was connected to our personal blogs was the comparison to different places on campus.
Example classroom space compared to the student recreational center space. This expanded my
writing but allowing me to take certain text such as setting,environment and historical events to
my writing. It has given the skill to better understand and allow readers a different
comprehension and perspective of the writing. An example of this would be the novel 1984 by
George Orwell. Orwell used the text to show a dystopian society with that he was able to use the
setting,time period and the society's space as a way of conveying the totalitarian power in the
book. Project space helped my writing by training me to create a writing space for my audience
and doing more extensive research and use of research. I did this with my writing for project
space when I brought the idea of everyday city council into relevance with a fictional dystopian
novel.
Project Web concept was about the uses of sources, personal weebly blog pages and
writing aids. Project web brought the idea of modern technology into current social and cultural
issues. An example of this is when I researched about college rapes. Rape is a rising social and
cultural issue that the media has been able to shed some light upon the topic may it be negative
or positive. As a developing writer and a writer in a generation where technology is our
livelihood. It helped me by helping me find strong anf academic sources, it helped me by finding
websites that solely had writers in mind such as person writer and purdue that give many helpful
tips.

Throughout this semester I have had many assignments and many lectures that have
shaped and helped me develop my writing and have helped lead me to the objective of the class.
The greatest lesson I have learned yet is that writing is everlasting and ever changeable. As a
professor Vana Derohanessian said writing recursive. As I continue to learn here in CSUN, my
writing to will develop and get better.
