any other text, how do you make
sense of whats on the page? What
mental processes do you go
through?

Clauses!
Simply put, they are the smallest unit of
meaning. There is no smaller way to express a
complete thought.

Definition of a Clause
A group of words containing a subject and a
verb. Examples:
Although Mr. Hopkins taught
He sold on the corner
Where boys moved chocolate bars for
fundraisers

Opposite of a Clause: Phrase


Group of words which lacks a subject or a verb.
Examples:
In the afternoon
At the cafeteria
Shining so brightly

Two Main Types of Clauses


Dependent (a/k/a
subordinate): Cant
stand on its own

Independent: Can
stand on its own (i.e.,
be a sentence)

Example:
Because Derek plays
football

Example:
Derek plays football
