Professor: Rickey Moroney

Course: EDU 521

Date: 4/27/2015

Grade: Kindergarten

Topic: Clothing of the Seasons

Content Area: Science

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES
Following the students viewing a book video on YouTube titled All Around the Seasons by
Barney Saltzberg, students will be able to identify which weather characteristics are associated
with each season through playing a matching game created by the teacher on the SmartBoard.
Then, students will be divided into small groups and given graphic organizer poster in addition to
receiving images of different clothing. Students will then be asked to sort, and glue clothing
images into appropriate season box on the graphic organizer.
STANDARDS AND INDICATORS
It will be evident that students have an understanding of the four seasons and can identify the
clothing worn in both winter and summer as they glue the images into the appropriate boxes on
their graphic organizers and then share them with the class.
NEW YORK STATE STANDARDS
E.S3.3 Share their findings with others and actively seek their interpretations and ideas.
E.T1.3 Analysis Inquiry and Design, generate ideas for possible solutions individually and group
activity
COMMON CORE STANDARDS
K.MD.3 Measurement and Data, classify objects into given categories
Motivation: Students will be shown a book video on YouTube about the Four Seasons and then
participate in a class discussion about the video.

STRATEGIES
Visual aide, interactive game, technology usage, group discussion, group work, collaborative
learning

ADAPTATIONS
-

Children with special needs will receive help from a teachers aide to complete the
worksheet. A child with visual impairments will be seated closer to the Smart Board in
order to view the video clearly.
Children with ADHD will work with a teachers aide to complete Summer VS. Winter
Organizer worksheet
Students who have social anxiety will have the option to work independently on
worksheet
DIFFERENTATION OF INSTRUCTION

The teacher realizes that not all students respond to the same learning styles. Therefore, students
will be separated into two different groups by learning style. Students who are visual learners
will complete the worksheet. Students who are auditory learners will be read a short story about
summer and winter and then asked to write down five facts about each season based on the story
with teacher guidance.
DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
1. Students will view a video book based on the four seasons and will then answer questions
posed by the teacher in order to understand and identify characteristics of both summer
and winter. (What do you see in the video?) (What are the four seasons?) (Do we
experience changes in our environment like the ones shown in the video?)(What type
of weather do we experience in the Winter? Summer?) (What is your favorite season?)
2. Students will be shown a matching game displayed on the SmartBoard and then asked to
come up to find a Winter or a Summer clothing match. Once the student finds a match,
they will identify the piece of clothing and name the season in which it is associated with.
(What clothing item do you see?) (Is this item worn when it is warm or cold outside?)
(Which season do you think you would wear this clothing item?) (Do you have any of
these items at home?)
3. Looking at the different clothing images given by the teacher, students will sort the
clothing by season. (What types of clothing do you see?) (Do you wear any of these
clothes throughout the year?) (Can you name a piece of clothing worn in the summer?
Winter?) (What clothing item is your favorite and why?)
4. After sorting the items, students will learn how to complete a basic organizer worksheet
by gluing the items in the correct column. (What is the difference between Summer and
Winter?) (Can you name some of the clothing items that you would place in the
Summer column of your worksheet? What about Winter?)

ASSESSMENT
The teacher will observe the organizer worksheet to ensure that the lesson was understood and
items are placed in the correct category column.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

For homework, students will be asked to create a diorama with parental guidance, about one of
the seasons reviewed in They will then be asked to bring them in at the end of the week to share
with the class.
FOLLOW UP AND ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT
The students will each write a short sentence about the season of their choice and then draw a
picture to accompany their sentence.
