Spinal Cord Disabilities Lesson Plan
Characteristics and Implications of Spinal Cord Disabilities:
Most Common to the spinal cord: tetraplegia, paraplegia, and spina bifida
Most common Spinal column deviations: scoliosis, kyphosis, lorgosis, spondylolysis,
spondylolisthesis
Understand the paralysis associated with the spinal injury
o Completely severed, sensation below the waste, etc.
Health Conditions that could result from spinal injury:
o Bruising
o Urinary tract infections
o Obesity
o Pressure sores
Things to consider with each student with spinal injury:
o Upper body strength
o Endurance
o Range of Motion
Classify each student by:
o Arm and hand movement and functioning
o How stable is their trunk
Make sure everyone in the classroom can use the wheelchairs
Make activity based on the assessment test given before the Basketball Unit
Weeklong Unit: Basketball
Activity: 3 vs. 3 half court basketball, this activity should be used toward the end of the
basketball unit so that all skills have been used and understood in order to play a 3 vs. 3
scrimmage type of environment
3 vs. 3 Half-court Basketball
Adaptations being used:
o 2 people in wheelchairs, and one standing passer for each team
o People in wheelchairs can only be the shooters, the people standing can only pass
the ball, but anyone can pass the ball to one-another if its necessary
o As soon as one team shoots the ball (and it hits the rim), and the opposing team
rebounds, that team has to take it back to the three point line and continue play
from there
o People in wheelchairs are only allowed three pushes upon receiving possession of
the ball
o The kids standing cannot block the ball, only kids in the wheelchairs can block
each others shots

Inclusive environment in class include:

o Having both spinal injury students, and non-spinal injury students participate
o Having students that dont have spinal injuries experience what playing basketball
in a wheelchair is like
o Give each student the opportunity the ability to pass and play basketball together
with spinal injured students and non-spinally injured students
Class Format:
o I want to do a team inclusive format so that the students can understand how to
play and adapt to having to play basketball in a wheelchair, and be able to
recognize the cooperation needed in order to have a successful wheelchair
basketball team
Task Analysis
o Physical Demands:

Endurance when pushing wheelchair
