groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts,
building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
Content Objectives:

I can identify important events that led up to the American Revolution.

Language Objectives:

Students will discuss in small groups.

Students will share ideas in a whole class discussion.

Vocabulary: colonists, tax, protest, acts, revolution

Materials: Slate, dry erase marker, eraser, assigned numbers of paper, social
studies textbook
Anticipatory Set: Students will discuss in groups the relationship between the
colonists and the British.
Teacher Actions:
Engage students in the anticipatory set.
Ask each group to discuss what the relationship between these two
groups of people was like.
Discusses objective.
Provides directions and rules for the activity.

Provides each student with a number between one and four.

Discusses review problems as a class.
Provides students with closure question.

Student Actions:
Discuss in groups the anticipatory set.
One spokesperson from each group will share with the class.
Volunteers will state the objective.
Listen to directions and rules of the activity.
Each will pick a number between one and four.
Each will get a chance to write the answer on the white board for their
group.
Answers closure question.
Variations:
Students could write their own review questions to ask the class.
Modifications:
Teacher may need to provide more guidance to students who are having
difficulty finding the answers in the social studies textbook.
Teacher may encourage students to think of their own review questions to
ask the class.

Observation of students.
