Phys Ed Classroom Management Plan

1. Safe Learning Environment:

o To create a positive learning environment in the classroom Im following Jacob
Kounins Behavior Theory on classroom management. His theory covers Ripple
Effect, Withitness, Overlapping, Effective Transitions, Momentum, Smoothness,
and Group Alerting all of these will help me becoming a teacher. Ripple Effect
When a teacher corrects the misbehavior of one individual student it often
positively influences the behavior of the other students nearby. Withitness Need
for teacher to be aware of what is going on in all parts of the classroom at all
times. Overlapping Process of attending to two or more events at the same time.
Effective Transitions Keeping lessons moving with avoiding abrupt changes.
Momentum Keeping the flow of the lesson without changing your instruction
during the lesson. Smoothness Maintaining direction in the lesson and not being
diverted by irrelevant incidents. Group Altering Technique to keep the entire
class involved in the learning process so that students are active participants at all
times.
o Kounins Theory- I will use Kounins theory because teachers need to be attentive
to all aspects of the classroom. He believes that effective teachers keep students
attentive and actively involved. By keeping all the students on task and attentive
they will understand the material as well as perform the task at hand better
without being confused. By making sure the students stay on task it wont allow
them to misbehave. If one student is misbehaving and I correct it right away the
other students see that and the stop doing what they are doing this is called the
ripple effect. The ripple effect is when one student's behavior is corrected; it often
influences another student's behavior nearby. I want to stop misbehavior in my
class so the students have the best chance for education and the key to a
successful classroom is not the way I handle misbehavior when it occurs, but
instead what I do to completely prevent classroom problems from ever occurring
within the classroom at all. During active learning time the students will behave in
an appropriate manner, respecting themselves and their classmates.
o The classroom rules will be posted at the front of the gym so the students can see
them. The students will have the ability to create the rules of the class at the
beginning of the school year so they have a feeling of control of the class. By
letting the students create the rules it will encourage leadership and a positive
learning environment in the classroom. We will go through the rules on the first
day of class, by doing so it will keep Mr. Schwantes and his students accountable
over the year. Using different types of teaching strategies during the year will
keep the students actively learning. By identifying what works best for each

student will benefit the whole class because it will keep everyone involved in
class activities. One of the big goals for Mr. Schwantes is developing a
professional relationship with all of his students. Creating these relationships will
allow me to become a better educator and be more productive in each class.

2. Rules of the Phys Ed Classroom:

o On the first day of class the students will receive and handout with the syllabi,
expectations, and the classroom management plan. The students will spread out in
the gym and come up with two rules that they want the class to follow. Then we
will come together and take the top five rules and create a poster that will be put
up so that everyone can see it. I will have five of my own rules that I want them to
follow and they will have the other five from their list. By doing this it will keep
the student accountable for the class as well as encouraging leadership. Students
with disabilities wont be treated any different by their classmates if and they will
be modifications to every activity that we are working on in class so they can
participate.
My Three Rules:
o Work your hardest everyday
o Respect teacher and peers
o Respect the equipment that you are playing with
Homework Policy:
o For homework to be considered complete, all parts of the homework must be
complete.
o Homework must be handed in to the appropriate place before you enter into the
classroom. Each class will have a folder on my cart that they will put any
homework assignment, test, or worksheet from the day in before or after class.
o Handing in late homework will be accepted but if it is after the beginning of class
there will be a 10% decrease in the grade for that assignment. For every day after
that there will be a 20 % decrease in that assignment. After a week that
assignment will not be accepeted.

o If you need help with homework speak with me after class to set up a time that I
can help you.

Classroom Policy:
o No electronic devices in the gym unless I say that we are using them that day. If I
see one I will take it and it will be in the office to pick up at the end of the day.
No warning and no negotiations.
o No hats, beanies, do-rags, or hoods may be worn after you cross the door to the
classroom. Each time that you have one of the aforementioned items on in the
classroom it will be taken from you and held in the office. There will be no
warnings given and there is no room for negotiation.
o No food or drinks in the gym.
o Gum is never allowed in the gym. Any student who is chewing gum in class will
be given a consequence, must throw the gum away, and will have lunch detention
with Mr. Schwantes.
o If a students continues to misbehave in class they will have to write a letter to
class apologizing to them and how they will do better in the future this will be
have to be done by the next class period. This works with Kounins theory on
behavior.
o Be on time to class.
o Be respectful to other in locker room, classmates and with use of the equipment.
o When you have a problem, involve an adult (parent, counselor, teacher or a
principal) as soon as possible
o If a student is sick a parent note is good for one day after that they student needs
a doctors note.
o Students are required to wear the appropriate foot wear and clothing that they can
be active in.
o If I have a student with a disability I will have teacher assistant if needed or a
student helper.
Consequences:
1st offense Class warning
2nd offense Verbal warning to the individual
3rd offense - Meeting with Mr. Schwantes after-class, or after school meeting.
4th offense Meeting with Mr. Schwantes after-class or after school meeting and a
call home, and loss of points for the day.
o 5th offense - Meeting with Mr. Schwantes after-class or after school and a meeting
with the principal to figure out the appropriate consequence, a call home, and loss
of points for the day.
o
o
o
o

Conflict between Students:

o Pull the students aside and have a conversation with both of them to see what is
going on and figure out how we can fix it.
o If it continues pull them aside and have them sit out for a while.
o If it continues after that we will get the principle involved and come up with a
consequence.

3. Grouping:
o Partners: I have various ways to put students into groups. Some of the ways are
height, hair color, opposite gender, and same ability or different ability depending
on the activity. If there is someone that doesnt have a partner I will have a
designated area for them to go and I will put them with a group. When we do this
the student need to respect and communicate in an appropriate manner discussed
at the beginning of the semester.
o Groups: I will have the students find a partner by one of the ways from above
and then split them from there to make larger groups. I will also count them off by
numbers if I need to make multiple groups. Before the semester starts I will have
pre-determined squads so when they come to class I can put squads together
depending on the activity. This well make the classes run smoother and without
confusion.
o Squads: The squads will be pre-determined ever two weeks so that students work
with each other and build a relationship with each other. The list will be placed at
the main door so that they can put themselves into each squad. By doing this it
lessens the chance that the more athletic students are grouped together and the
non-athletic students are grouped together.

o When it comes to students with disabilities they will be included in the groups and
activities.
Resources: Knowledge that I have gained in my education and own experiences.

4. Non-Instructional Methods
o Entering/Exiting Gymnasium: When the bell rings for the previous class to be
over the students need to go to the locker room and change immediately. When
they come into the gym they will get into their squads and prepare for class to
start. The class period is 45 minutes; the students will be given 10 minutes to go
to the locker room to shower and change for their next class. They will respect
one another in the locker room and change as fast as they can to get to class. Each
student will be assigned a locker at the beginning of the school year. They will
also be given a lock for their locker. They are responsible for the locker and lock
if any damage or lost locks they will be billed for the damages. Mr. Schwantes is
not responsible for any lost or stolen items in locker room. Valuables are not
encouraged in the locker room.
o Attendance: Attendance will be taken once everyone is in their squad and we
will proceed with the days activity. They will need to be in there groups by the
second bell. They can play with the equipment before they get into the squads.
o Starting/Stopping the Class: I will give the students instruction on the activity
that we are doing for the class but they wont go until I tell them to start or go get
the equipment that we are using. I will demonstrate the activity and the cues that I
want them to work on during class. If I want them to stop the activity I will
whistle. Once they hear me whistle I want them to stop what they are doing and
put the equipment down so they can pay attention to the next instructions. If I
have to continue to whistle there will be consequences.
o Intrusive Events: Intrusive events are things that come up during class that are
common; like bathroom breaks, water breaks, blowing nose, and sickness. When
students ask to go to the bathroom I will give them three minutes to go and come
back if they are longer than three minutes there will be consequences. Water
breaks will be given as a full class and not individuals. Water breaks will last no
longer than two minutes so that we can get back to the activity. If a student is sick
they need to let me know before class so if they cant participate in the activity I
can have them do an alternate assignment that deals with the activity.
o Equipment Use: The equipment depends on the unit that we are working on. I
will have the equipment out for each class but I need help I will have designated

students each week to help me set things up. When it comes time to put
equipment away each student will put their equipment away neat and orderly
fashion. If I see any student continuing to play or using the equipment the way its
not supposed to be used there will be consequences. At the end of class those
students that helped set up will also help pick up equipment. Broken equipment
will be given to Mr. Schwantes to be taken care of. I will document what and how
it broke so that way if I need to show the principle what happened I can show
them. The equipment room will have places that students with disabilities can
access equipment with ease. The shelves will be lower so they can grab the items
that they need.
Resources: Knowledge that I have gained in my education and own experiences.

5. Safety (Indoor/Outdoor)
o Indoor: If there is an injury during the activity I will assess the injured and if it is
a serious injury I will whistle to stop the class. For example if the student hit their
head I will have the class stop and I will take the appropriate steps to check for a
concussion. If it is a minor bump or scrap I will have them come over to me to
evaluate the injury so the class can continue to play. If there is a tornado we will
line up in a single file line and go to the designated area that the school has put
forth. In case of a fire we will line up at the door that I have designated at the
beginning of the year and proceed outside to the designated area. If there is a
shooting in the build I will lock the doors to the gym and make sure the students
dont open the doors. We will follow the procedures that the school puts forth for
the school district.
o Outdoor: For injuries outside it wont change for the inside. If there is a chance
of a tornado or bad weather we wont be going outside. We will be doing the
activity indoors if possible or changing it to fit indoors. If there is a fire we will go
to the designated area that the school wants us to go to. In case of a gun shooting I
will take the students away from the school so they are safe and out of harms
way.

6. Parent Teacher Communication

o Parents will receive contract that they will sign and date to show that they
understand the procedures of the class and school policies.
o They will also have a survey sheet that they need to complete on their child.
o They will also receive my contact information if they have any questions.
o When I send the letter home to the parents they will have to fill out a section on
what works best for their child that I can implement in my class.
