Note that while no specific course helps students move toward achieving all of those
outcomes, each Gen Ed course is supposed to help you make progress in achieving as many of
those outcomes as are relevant to the course. Making specific references to your work in this
course, tell me how you have progressed toward achieving at least three of those outcomes.
Salt Lake Community College has identified seven learning outcomes that should be
fulfilled through the completion of your degree. The three most relevant learning outcomes I
have progressed towards through this class are the ability to: develop the knowledge and skills
to be civically engaged, think critically and creatively about various situations and develop the
knowledge and skills to work with others in a professional and constructive manner.
This class more than anything has help me realize the importance of being involved and
knowledgeable about the political processes in your government. Since this class and the
coursework involved require becoming familiar with policies and procedures you may not have
been aware of otherwise, I feel like I am able to communicate more competently about some
areas of politics. The discussions we had a class involving the United States Constitution were
particularly enlightening. Although I have been mildly knowledgeable about the Constitution my
entire life, I learned a lot by analyzing the different sections and being able to review my
classmates perspectives as well.
Just as important as being civically engaged, the ability to think critically and creatively
is another skill I have been able to enhance through this course. One of the most interesting
assignments I completed in this class came from investigating and analyzing campaign
financing. I was able to research and constructively criticize the use of campaign financing in
Senate elections. I know now the insanity of not only Presidential campaign financing, but also
the apparent misuse of campaigning on a local, statewide level.
Lastly, through completing this course I have been able to continue to develop my
knowledge and skills to work with others in a professional and constructive manner. I tend to
believe Im a minority in the State of Utah when it comes to politics. I do not generally think
conservatively nor do I declare to be a part of any political party, especially a part of the
Republican Party. This course has helped me understand the views of others and engage in
regular open and honest communication even when our viewpoints vary or are polar opposites.
Through this Political Science course I was able to continue to work toward my Learning
Outcomes and believe that I will be able to take a lot from this class to use not only in my
professional and educational experiences but also in my personal communication and general
knowledge on parts of the United States political system.
