Lady Macbeth has been sleep walking and the gentlewoman who has observed this, calls in the
doctor. She has also been talking in her sleep about regretting killing Duncan and going over
Macbeth’s letter.
At V, scene ii
They talk about how Macbeth has lost his self control. They are meeting with the Scottish troops
who have turned against Macbeth and the English troops in Birnam.
Macbeth feels that he is invincible and doesn’t have to do anything about the war reports coming
in. A servant comes in to tell him that there are ten thousand soldiers outside but Macbeth just
calls him a fool and tells him to leave. Macbeth asks the doctor how his wife is and tells the
doctor to diagnose and cure her and erase the memories of what they have done, but the doctor
tells him that it is up to her to do that.
Act V, scene iv
Act V, scene v
Macbeth will not go out to fight and Lady Macbeth has killed herself. Macbeth does not have
time to mourn because then a messenger comes in and tells him that “the wood began to move”
(35). Macbeth finally realizes that he is in trouble and he begins to doubt the witches.
Act V, scene vi
Malcom orders everyone to throw down the trees they have been hiding behind and Macduff
orders that they sound the trumpet.
Macbeth and Macduff fight and Macduff reveals to Macbeth that technically, he’s not woman-
born because his mom died before giving birth to him. Macbeth is slain.
