Lesson Title: Math Bowling

Basic Facts and Whole Number Computation
By: Karen Sanchez, Karina Sanchez & Tylee Hall
Grade Level: 2nd grade
Common Core Standards:2.OA.A.1- Represent and solve problems involving
addition and subtraction.
Learning Objective:
Students will be able to create mathematical equations using 3 one digit numbers by
using addition or subtraction. Students will use computation and estimation.
Mathematics involved: Adding and subtracting whole numbers while making
equations.
Description of Activity:
Students will be in groups of 2 or 3
Take 3 dice and roll them on worksheet with the 10 pins
Use the numbers on the 3 dice to come up with equations that result in
answers that are on the pins (i.e. if you roll a 4, 3, and 2, you can knock down
the 9 pins with 4+3+2=9)
If you produce equations that equal ten, you get a strike (10 points)
Cannot exceed over 10, the points will not count (remember can use
subtraction)
Write down your score (i.e. 9=9 points)
Person with the highest score wins
Suggestions for Modifications:
ELLs: Show bowling clip so they understand the concept and culture of the game
-To help with struggling students, can reduce number of dice and focus on the sum
of two numbers, when master those skill can add 3 dice
-For excelling learners can introduce multiplication and division concepts to finding
the sum
-For a competitive aspect can include winners of each table enter into a bowling
competition
Materials:
Worksheet with 10 pins
3 dice
