Art Museum Lesson Plan


Unit Title: Identifying your Identity Grade Level: Middle School, 7th Grade
Enduring Idea: Discovering your own identity is an important part of every students life.
Rationale: Students need to learn about the importance of identity, because it defines who you are and
what you stand for. Students, at this age, are on the brink of discovering and claiming their own individual
identities, and being able to learn about how to express your identity through art is an important skill to
have.
Key Concepts about Big Idea addressed in this Unit: Identity can be expressed in multiple ways.
Key Concepts about Art/Visual Culture addressed in this unit: Identity can be expressed through art
making.
1Essential Question: How can you identify yourself through art?
2Unit Overview: In this unit students will discover the various components that make up their own
identities, as well as learning about how to express themselves and their identities.
Unit Objectives:
1. After the lesson, students will recognize that your identity can be influenced by your surroundings.
2. After the lesson, students will be able to explain how identity can be expressed in various ways.
3. After the lesson, students will discuss how their identities can change over time.
Assessment:
Evidence: Discussion Participation, Word Web, Sketches,
Levels & Criteria for each piece of evidence
Exemplary: Students will be engaged within the group discussion, stay focused during the
museum tour, and work diligently on their self-portrait sketches.
Essential: Students will be somewhat engaged within the group discussion, stay mildly
focused during the museum tour, and will need to reminders to work hard during the
sketching period for the self-portrait project.
Partial: Students will engage poorly or not at all during the group discussion, need to be
constantly reminded to stay focused during the museum tour, and work very little on their
sketches for the self-portrait project.
INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE:
Teaching Procedure (Pre Tour): Friday, September 11, 2015
Purpose: To introduce the big idea of identity and to define the different components that make up
someones identity.
Resources & Materials for Teacher/Students:
Cultural Exemplar/Visual: Discuss the artists that we will learn about in this lesson, work on
creating a word web for the definition of identity
Supplies and Equipment: PowerPoint of images, access to the Modern Museum of Arts website,
pencils, erasers, and paper

Museum Name: The Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas
Hours and Date: Leave school at 8:30am, tour from 11:00-12:00, lunch break from 12:00-12:30, leave
museum at 1:15pm, September 18, 2015
When to Book Tour: September 3, 2015 (Book at least 2 weeks in advance)
Cost: $9 per student, $15 per chaperone
Admission: $4 for students with ID, $10 for general admission
Transportation: Varies by district, or apply for travel grant
Lunch: $5 per student, picnic style, sack lunches bought/prepared at the school prior to leaving
Chaperones Needed for 31 Students: 4, including me (Not specified on website)
