Asymptotic Filmmaking: Merging the theoretical/abstract with the visual

A film that explores mathematical and scientific phenomena in the tradition of experimental
cinema. Asymptotic filmmaking does not follow the tradition of the documentary nor of the
educational film. Filmmaking techniques are used to relay the diverse movements and principles
of chosen mathematical and scientific phenomena. Asymptotic filmmaking aims to combine the
external and internal aesthetics and principles of mathematics and science to create innovative
filmmaking (in the tradition of experimental filmmaking). Scientific and mathematical
phenomena are the primary and explicit subjects and implications of asymptotic filmmaking
instead of the subtle or secondary subjects of the film.
Ideas for what to film:
-Asymptotes
-Fields (electromagnetic, tensor, etc.)
-Topological forms
-Continuity in the tradition of topology
-Coordinate systems
-Graph theory
-Planes
-etc
Characteristics of an asymptotic film:
-Mechanics of an asymptote and/or asymptotic systems
-The approaching of infinity or the fundamental truth
-Should demand intense visual or sensory and intellectual interaction from the audience and
filmmaker
-The nature of motion and progression in a general context and/or towards infinite truths
Values of Asymptotic Filmmaking:
-Brings mathematics and science to the forefront of the film medium
-Active filmmaking and viewing
