Bullying Research Paper
Dumb, ugly, and fat, are just some of the words that bullies use to tear someone down.
Bullying Statics , Many victims of verbal bullying are affected in very real ways. Verbal
bullying can affect one's self image, and affect someone in emotional and psychological
ways( bullying statistics).According to To Take a Stand written by Carrie Golus and Jack
Desrocher, 3.2 million people are victims of bullying. A recent study in the United States
found that 10% percent of students were victims of severe bullying. Another study found that
75% of children were bullied at least once during their school years( Golus and Desrocher).
These statistics are shockingly high to some people. How do they get that high? One main reason
that bullying has increased so much over the past few years is technology and the access it gives
to bullying people. Bullying not only can happen in person, but also by texting, on facebook,
email, and other websites that are easily accessible. What people do not realize is that bullying
affects people not only in the now, but into the future. As a writer, I belive that there are fours
ways that you can help people that are bullied such as what bullying is, how it affects people, the
benefits of not bullying, and where bullying occurs mostly.

Debbie Fox and Allan L. Beane, says bullying is, when one or more people hurt
someones body, feelings, or even his or her things on purpose. Bullying is a form of teasing

and picking on someone. People bully in many different forms. Some people bully in order to
make themselves feel better and to support their own insecurities. Bullying can be anything from
mean words to actions toward another person. As the acts of bullying increase, so do the amounts
of people who are falling into depression and are truly affected by the acts of bullying.People
who are bullied are, possess typically low self-esteem view themselves in a negative manner
(10 & 11), which can ultimately lead to depression( Sweare and Lembeck).

The first effect of bullying is depression. People who are bullied face depression because
they are told that they don't fit in or they are different. People that are bullied have
Depression and anxiety, increased feelings of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating
patterns, and loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy. These issues may persist into
adulthood ( www.stopbullying.gov). People who are bullied face low self-esteem making them
easy targets for the bullies. The second effect of bullying is anxiety. Bullied victims are likely to
have more anxiety than people who are not bullied. Depression and anxiety, increased feelings
of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in activities
they used to enjoy. These issues may persist into adulthood ( www.stopbullying.gov). People
who are involved in bullying or have been bullied have higher anxiety levels than people who
are involved bullying or not involved. Higher levels of anxiety are experienced by people that
are bullied. The last effect of bullying is suicide. Children who are being bullied are more likely
to attempt suicide more than people who are not bullied . According to the Suicide Awareness
Voices for Education suicides among 15-24 years olds is the third leading cause of death for

youth. One of 65,000 children ages 10 to 14 commit suicide every year. Over 16% of students
seriously consider suicide, 13% create a plan, and 8 percent have made a serious attempt( heads
up). There are many different signs of suicide. One commons sign is depression and talking about
killing themselves or others.
On April 20, 1999 in a high school in Littleton, Colorado, 13 people (12 students and 1
teacher) became the victims of a school shooting. Making a Sound for a Voice Unheard states,
Bullying statistics say revenge is the strongest motivation for school shootings
(makebeatsnotbeatdowns.org). These 13 people were killed by 2 students who were the face of
people who have been bullied. As is too common in high school, the boys found themselves
frequently picked on by athletes and other students( Rosenberg). The bullying was so bad, it
made them turn to violence in order to have a voice and get back at the student bodied who
bullied them. According to Make a Sound for a Voice Unheard, 87% said that shooting are
motivated by desire to to get back at those who hurt them. Thirteen people lost their lives due
to people who chose to bully others. This is not an excuse for what happened, but guidance into
the reasons as to why and how things got so out of hand when children get bullied.
The first benefits of decreased bullying are to decrease depression. In order to decrease
depression, self-esteem need to be raised, and this happens by delightful to them and being their
friends. People with low self-esteem need to be surrounded by people who help them see the
positive in life. Another benefit of not bullying is decline of suicide with this decrease it will save
people lives more and children will be able fulfill their dreams. Bullying occurs in many
Stillwell

different places. The first place and most common place it occurs is in school. Most of the
children that are bullied in school have more of a risk of them bullying someone else. Bully
victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to
studies by Yale University. Also, 10 to 14 year old girls may be at even higher risk for
suicide( Heads up).The second place that bullying occurs is at work. The third place that
bullying occurs is home. The fourth place that bullying occurs is online. It can be said that
bullying is literally found all around us in our daily lives.
If you or someone you know is being bullied there are many things that you can do in
order to get help and raise awareness about the problem. There are strategies that can be tried in
each different situation of bullying. First, you can try to work it out yourself. This means you can
approach the person bullying you and ask them to stop. See why they are bullying you and what
you can do to make them stop. Share your feelings with the person and let them know that what
they are doing is upsetting you. If you are being bullied at school and working it out yourself
does not work, you can find someone like a teacher, guidance counselor, or principal to talk to
about the situation. Bring in guest speakers: These do not have to be globally recognized
speakers. Speakers can be community leaders, school board members and other members of the
community( Heads One of these adults should be able to help smother the situation and get to
the bottom of the bullying. If you are being bullied at work and working it out by yourself
doesnt work, seek out a supervisor or a human resources manager to help you with the situation.
Once the bullying has stopped, raising awareness in the school or office would be a good thing to

do. Maybe offer to host bullying seminars to help each individual know what bullying is, how it
affects people, and if they are dealing with it what they can do.Research shows that schools
with unified violence prevention program cut their incidents of violence up to 50% and increase
their academic standing( dreiblatt). If it happens to you, it is most likely happening to others as
well.
Bullying is found throughout the entire world and in places you would least likely suspect
it. If bullying is happening, it is for a reason and it is important to raise awareness so that
bullying can and will be stopped. There are many effects that bullying has on the individual and
these effects can lead to pretty serious events, like a shooting or suicide. Bullying should not be
taken lightly, but should be handled in a very serious manner. Bullying is not a new action, but
one that has been happening for years and years, but seems with technology that it is becoming
easier to bully one another. It is up to us to help stop the rise in bullying.Making a Sound for a
Voice Unheard states , Since 2002, at least 15 schoolchildren ages 11 to 14 have committed
suicide (makebeatsnotbeatdowns.org)
