ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE

Review:
1. What is force?
- Force is the rate of change of momentum.
2. What is weight?
- Weight is force upon an object due to gravity.
Eliciting Ideas:
1. A small ball and an iron block are placed in water. What will happen to the small ball and
iron block?
- Small ball will float while iron block will sink.
2. Do you know why the small ball floats while the iron block sinks in water?
- the density of a small ball is less than that of water, thus it floats.
- the density of iron block is more than that water, thus it sinks.
3. When the small ball is pushed down below the water surface and released, it bobs up
again. Why it happened?
- There have upward force acting on the ball.
4. What is buoyant force?
- The buoyant force is an upward force resulting from an object being wholly or
partially immersed in a fluid.
Restructuring of Ideas:
1. What will happen if an object is place in a Eureka tin?
- Water will displace into the beaker.
2. How does buoyant force relate to the weight of liquid displaced?
- The buoyant force acted on the object is equal to the weight of the liquid it
displaced.
Question:
It is very much easier to lift a box when it is beneath the water surface as seen in figure below.
Can you explain why?
- An object immersed in water is subjected to two forces, the weight of the objects which act
downward and buoyant force which acts upwards.
- The buoyant force is the upward force resulting from an object being wholly or partially
immersed in a fluid.
- Cause of this force, make us easy to lift the box beneath the water surface.
Closure:
1. What is buoyant force?
- The buoyant force is an upward force resulting from an object being wholly or
partially immersed in a fluid.
2. How to relate buoyant force to the weight of liquid displaced?
- The buoyant force acted on the object is equal to the weight of the water it
displaced.
3. State that Archimedes principle.
- Archimedes principle state that state that an object which is partially or wholly
immersed in fluid, is acted on by a buoyant force is equal to the weight of displacement
of fluid.
4. Give two examples of applications by using Archimedes principle.
- Ship; hot-air balloon; submarine.
