California content standard of 11.11 which aims for the students to analyze the major social problems and
domestic policy issues in contemporary American society to be responsible citizens of the future.
Big Ideas:
What is racism? How has racism changed over the years? In modern society, are we racially equal as the laws
institute?

Unit Goals and Objectives:


By the end of this unit, students will be able to critically think, explain, and analyze what racism is through
different assessments. Also, students will be able to create a timeline that shows how racism first began and
has changed over the years in the US. And lastly, students will be able to write an essay on how racism looks
like in modern society with the knowledge from previous lessons.

Unit Summary:
As described previously, this unit plan is for students to learn about what racism is within the context of
social studies. As a junior class, we shall look into different definitions of racism for clarity at first. With that
knowledge, we shall dissect how racism has changed over the years in the United States much more closely

with sharpened tools. For the purpose of this unit plan, we will write, read, discuss, create, and even do
presentations on the issue of racism to gain bigger scope of this particular social problem.
