Multi-Camera Production Roles

You will be producing 3-4 interviews during your chat show. For each interview state who will be doing
which role. You must do EVERY role once during the show.
For more information on what each role entails, visit
http://www.bbc.co.uk/academy/collegeofproduction/collections/job_profiles
And search through the video profiles on the site.
TASK 1: Define each of the following roles;
Interviewer
Interviewers can write there scripts or not it depends on whether they are a presenter or a
broadcast journalist either way they are in charge of making the guest answer the questions
whatever technique they may use. You can either make the interviewee feel comfortable and
relaxed or they can put them on the spot and make them feel pressured this is good if you want to
show them in a bad light, this is used a lot on politicians.
They will mainly be in front of the camera in the studio talking to the guest either that or they will be
on location somewhere talking in front of a venue that is relevant to the story, for example if they
had a story about how beer effects the health they might position themselves in front of a brewery.
If they are broadcast journalist they will need to be good at English and creating compelling, linking
and relevant questions, if not they will just have to pronounce words well.

Director
The director needs to make sure that all is going to run accordingly to plan that all the cameras are
where they should be and that all guests are on QUE.

The director will usually be on the front line effacting the scene directly but in our production the
director will be in the control room looking at the shots trough a vision mixer and talking to the
guests as they wait and sending them out when they are ready.

They need to have a very wide variety of skills as they see all of the stages and overlook it all.

Camera Person
The camera person is reasonable for making sure the camera is doing what the director, make sure
every person in focused and in shot not cutting anyone out.

Production Booklet

They will be working i9n the studio floor as they have be in front of the action, they will have the
director talking to them from the control room telling them how to move their camera.
They need to be able to operate the camera to its full ability so the director can ask anything of the
cameraman and the can make it happen quickly so they can cut to it as soon as possible.

Sound Mixing
Sound mixers are in charge of making sure that everything said is recorded and nothing is missed,
they will have their own station and have to act fast if the loose a feed.

They will work in the control room, next to the vision mixer this is so the can communicate so if they
are moving from one camera to the other they will need to make sure the sound relates well.

They will need lots of experience so they know how to deal with any situation quickly and efficiently.

Vision Mixing
They do what is says on the tin, they mix up visuals, they change from camera to camera to keep
the audience interested in the programing.

They are in the control room, watching the whole thing unfold trough screens.

They will need lots of experience so they know how to deal with any situation quickly and efficiently.

Graphics Generator
When a guest is introduced there is a little tab that tells the audience their name and what they do,
it might also show why they are relevant to the story. Someone has to make these graphics and

Production Booklet

they are the Graphic generators. They may also be in charge of the tittle and credits.

They will probably be in the control room, however most of their work is pre-production in
preparation for the day then the vision mixer will insert it.

They need good computer skills.

Lighting Desk
They have to make sure all the lights are how the director wants it.

They work on the studio floor.

They will need lots of experience so they know how to deal with any situation quickly and efficiently.

Floor Manager
They have to make sure that everything is running on time and all the guests are were they should
be when they need to be, the usually organise this so you cant the guest leaving or arriving.

They will be on the set floor but they might have to change rooms to collect things or guests.

Production Booklet

Organisation skills so they can plan ahead and make all runs smoothly, and people skills so they
can get across what the guests need to do quickly.

What will be the content of your show?

Production Booklet

Create a mind map showing all the things you would like to include in your interview/chat show.

Define the format of your programme

Production Booklet

What will happen in the first segment?

The first segment will show me and guy introducing the show, the he will interview the new principle Jayne
Davis. We want to conduct this interview first because it is the biggest we have and we think it is going to be
the biggest impact so we want to grab peoples attention. We want to ask her questions that both the
students and parents want to know, we will ask her what her future plans are and how she plans to do that.

What will happen in the second segment?

Lewis will do the on location shoot and interview Mr Hobs, we have made this quite a short feature as is it
quite boring and slow, it will just quickly advertise the company and a little history.

What will happen in the third segment?

In this interview I will talk to jake clark who is a student at Henley collage he is part of the Henley Skate
park team and they are working on improving it, I will be talking about how close they are to getting there
and whether they will get it completed any time soon. This will be a good interview for the students because
a lot of them will be wandering about this park as the current one is not very good.

Any further notes;

(You may use cut aways to clips of them doing something relevant. Remember you will all be
swapping roles so you may not be able to film live at this point.)

Link between interview 1 and Interview 2

Guy thanks Jayne Davis saying what a pleasure it was to have her on the show, he then gives a brief
introduction as to where Lewis is telling audience what to expect then passes over to Lewis.

Link between interview 2 and Interview 3

Lewis thanks guy and starts his interview with Johnathan
When he is finished he shakes johns hand and thanks him for talking to him about his business he
