TheTruthAboutTruth
OneofmyparentsfavoritestoriestotellisaboutChristmasmorningof1999whenmy
familywasopeningpresents.Myolderbrother,whowasfiveyearsoldatthetime,wasvery
excitedafterrecentlyopeninghispresentsandmygrandfatherhadbegunopeninghispresent.
Result:mybrothercuthishandonmygrandfather'spresent.Myparents,however,remember
thedetailsofthisstorydifferently.Mymotherbelievesthatmybrotherwantedtohelpmy
grandfatheropenhisgift,whichwasadinnerknife.Outofexcitement,mybrothercuthishand.
Mydad,however,believesthatmybrotherwasrunningaroundbecausehewassoexcitedandhe
trippedandfellontomygrandfathersgiftwhichwerepeelers.16yearslater,myparentsarestill
arguingaboutthedetails,bothbelievingthattheirstoryistrue.Truthissubjectivebecauseitis
determinedbythebeliefofthattruth.Inoursociety,however,truthisoftenmistakenforfact.
Factsareobjectiveanddeterminedbymeasurableevidence.
Globalwarmingandclimatechangehavehadmanyphysicalandobservableeffectson
theearth.Glaciershaveshrunk,iceonriversandlakesisbreakingupearlier,plantandanimal
rangeshaveshifted,andtreesarefloweringsooner.Thereisclearandindisputableevidencethat
globalwarmingisineffectthisisfact.However,therearegroupsofpeoplethatsimplydonot
believethatglobalwarmingisactuallyreal.Theymaythinkthisbecauseitcontradictstheir
religiousbelieves.Itmaybebecausetheyhavenotexperiencedorobservedanyofthesechanges
fromwheretheylive.Itmayevenbebecausetheyarescaredandindenial.Despiteallofthe
facts,peoplechoosetobelievethatglobalwarmingdoesnotexistthisistruth.Alltruthis
supportedbybelief,andallbeliefcomesfromavarietyofreasons,andthesereasonscanbe
supportedbyfactsornot.Additionally,justbecausesomeonesbeliefisdisprovenbyfactsor

evidence,thatpersonsbeliefdoesntbecomeuntrue.Therefore,someonestruthcanexist
despitefacts.
In1935,ascientistbythenameofErwinSchrdingerdevisedathoughtexperiment
whereacat,lockedinabox,isexposedtoasmallamountofpoison.Itisunknowniftherewas
enoughpoisontokillthecatandbecausetheexperimentisunobservable,itisimpossibleto
knowifthecatisactuallydeadoralive.Becauseofthis,quantummechanicsimpliesthatthecat
issimultaneouslyaliveanddeadbothstatementsaretruebecauseneithercanprovetheother
wrong.Theexperimentwasoriginallyproducedtoexplainaparadox,butitalsoworksasan
effectiveexamplefortruth.Inrelativitytotruth,theSchrdingersCatexperimentillustratesthat
thetruth,intheabsenceoffacts,canbeanything.Therefore,truthissubjectiveandcanexist
despitefacts.Thetruthisdependentoneveryindividualandthattruthdoesnotoutweighthe
truthofanotherindividual.Eveniftwotruthsheldbytwodifferentpeoplearecontradicting,to
eachperson,whattheybelieveisthetruth.
Thetruthmayvarybetweeneverypersonbecauseeveryonemayhaveadifferentbelief
thatsupportswhattheyholdastrue.Butwhythenisitimportanttoseektruthinoneslife?To
me,itisimportanttoseekwhatIholdastruebecausethistruthcanprovidemewithasenseof
purpose.Ultimately,purposecreatesmotivationanddirectioninaworldfilledwithuncertainty.
Additionally,itisimportanttonotonlyseektruthinmylife,butalsounderstandthetruthsof
otherpeople,whichcanallowmetobecomeanopenmindedperson.Byexploringdifferent
beliefsandwhatothersfindtrue,Icanbetterunderstandotherpeoplesperspective,whichcan
evenhelpmeunderstandmyselfandmybeliefsbetter.
