Lesson 1 Cards and Counters
Whole class
o Based on the data collected from this lesson, it showed that the lesson had a
positive impact on student understanding of the lesson objective because all the
students progressed in their ability to complete the lesson. This progression is
shown in the data collected. Through teaching this lesson to many students I
found that the hands on method of practicing this learning objective had a positive
impact on the students learning because of the visual and kinesthetic connections
that were made between the student and the materials during the lesson.
o This lesson is given on an individual basis, so and instructional changes during
the lesson would not affect the whole class, only the student who was being taught
at that time. This lesson is taught on an individual basis to students who are
developmentally ready to move on; therefore the lesson delivery should not be
changed because it promotes student learning to the extent that they are
development ready for. There were not any modifications made during this lesson,
however if modifications were to be made it would be on a individual basis
because of the delivery of the lesson. Based on the set up of the curriculum,
students are not shown lessons until they are ready successful with it. All of the
students had the prior knowledge and skills to perform this lesson and be
successful. In the future for them and because of this the students who were
shown this lesson were able to be to improve student learning, I would make sure
that my first presentation of the lesson is precise and meaningful so that the
students see how the lesson is supposed to be completed.
Morgan Chambers
o Based on the individuality of this lesson in the Montessori curriculum, it is taught
when students are developmentally ready to work on this objective and once they
have mastered this they move on to the next lesson. Due to this, my high
achieving student had already surpassed this lesson because he has shown 100%
mastery of the lesson objective.
Reflection
o This lesson connected with the students because it was based off their prior
knowledge. The lesson engaged the students because it allowed them to work hands
on with materials which helped to enhance their understanding of the lesson
objective.
o This lesson was taught on an individual basis to students who were developmentally
ready for it.
o The only instructional aids used during this lesson were the materials of the lesson
which were used appropriately to aid in the students learning
o The student was actively engaged in the working moving the materials around to
produce learning.
o I presented the lesson in the order of which is directed from the Montessori methods,
therefore the lesson was given in a logical and meaningful manner.
o The materials were successful in helping to aid the student through her discovery of
the lesson objective.
o The students use number in their everyday life and being able to make the connection
between quantity and symbol help to ease the students ability to use numbers in her
everyday life, therefore the lesson connected with her life.
o Due to the individuality of this lesson, discipline techniques did not need to be
implemented.
o My interactions with the student during this lesson was individual and during this
time my attention was focused solely on this student showing the importance of the
relationship between the student and I and that I was interested and committed to her
work.
Professional Development
o One goal I have for myself is to become more knowledgeably with the Montessori
math curriculum. To do so I will practice presenting lesson and working within
the Montessori math album which helps to guide one through the Montessori
Morgan Chambers
materials. Another way to achieve this goal would be to sit in on the Montessori
methods class for math so that I would be able to seek advice and learn from the
Montessori instructor teaching the course.
o Another goal I have is to be more aware of the students readiness to move on or
back in the curriculum. One way to work on this is to observe the students during
their work more, so that I can develop an understanding of how they are
progressing through the curriculum. Another way to progress in this area is to
seek advice from other Montessori professionals. Seeking this guidance from
teachers who have been in the classroom for several years could be beneficial
because they may have more insight into this area or give examples of how they
track the students in their classroom since they have had so many years of
experiencing doing so.
Whole Class
o Overall, I feel that the different instructional methods in this unit had a positive
impact on all of the students in the class. All of the students were able to gain a
better understanding of the lesson objectives and show grow in their knowledge
with majority of the students showing mastery in the lessons. As the unit
progressed, the students were able to take their prior knowledge of the subject and
expand their learning based of it, which I feel helped them to all of have such a
gain academically throughout the unit. The only modifications that were made
during this unit came with the writing of knowledge in the final assessment. I
made this modification on the basis that if students could verbally express their
knowledge and illustrations of the assessment then they would receive credit for
mastery rather than having to express their knowledge through writing. As a
result, majority of the class, even the below average students, were able to achieve
mastery of the lesson objective.
o From day to day during the unit, students of all academic levels showed progress
in their content knowledge of the objectives. Due to this fact, there were not any
structural changes to the instruction of the lessons. If the students would not have
shown so much progress however, changes would have been implemented
accordingly. The only modification that came during this unit was changing the
standard of mastery of the final assessment where students received full mastery if
they were able to express their knowledge through illustrations and verbal
communication rather than just having to write down their knowledge. This was
Morgan Chambers
changed due to the fact that the standard corresponded with the science standards
and not the students abilities to write. By making this changes there was a
positive impact on student achievement with many more students receiving
mastery of the objective.
Reflection
o To engage the student during the unit, majority of the lesson were hands on
lessons where the students built models and constructed their knowledge through
materials on their own. To motivate the students learning they were also allowed
to use their own creativity to construct their own bird nest using their own design.
o During the unit, instructional methods included whole group and individual work
time.
o Rarely were instructional aids used other than books and shelf lessons, however
when videos of birds were shown the students were intrigued and enjoyed the
experience.
Morgan Chambers
o The student were actively involved throughout the unit because it consisted of
hands on lessons, discussion, exploring on the nature trail, and construction of
bird nests.
o The information given during this unit was clear and logically beginning with the
overall topic of birds and then continued through the different characteristics.
o The materials used were effective because all of the students were engaged
throughout the unit and show significant progress in their knowledge.
o The students related to this unit because they were able to look outside and see the
birds in their environment which intrigued them to learn more about the birds that
lived in our environment.
o During this unit, the normal expectations of students were still implemented and
addressed prior to every lesson so that the students knew what were expected of
them before each lesson began.
o I feel that my interactions with the students, as a whole, was fair and professional.
All of the student had the opportunity to participate throughout the unit and the
students were able to approach the teacher with any questions or comments they
had during the lessons.
Professional Development
o One goal I have for myself is to further my knowledge on unit topics such as this
one. I feel that being completely comfortable with my knowledge of a topic will
make the delivery of the unit much more effective because of my ability to relate
to it. To further my knowledge, I plan to research more and attend more science
conferences when available.
o Another goal I have for myself is to incorporate more construction activities
during units. The students really enjoyed and flourished in the construction of the
bird nests lesson and I feel that having more lessons like this would help to
engaged and motivate the students while allowing them to work on their creativity
and S.T.E.M. standards. To achieve this goal, I would collaborate with colleague
on their ideas and attend more S.T.E.M/ workshops.
Whole Group
Morgan Chambers
o Overall, I feel that the instruction of this lesson had a positive effect on the
students understanding of the lesson objective. The students were able to
successfully complete the lesson and were eager to engage and interact with their
peers during. All of the students in the classroom were able to show growth and
majority of the students showed mastery in the lesson objective. The students
were engaged in the lesson and worked well throughout, therefore there were no
modifications made during this lesson.
o I feel that the students worked through the lesson well, and that all students were
able to gain substantial progress in their learning so I would not change any aspect
of this lesson.
Reflection
o The lesson involved the students role playing scenarios and interacting with their
peers, therefore they were engaged and wanted to participate.
o Instructional methods included whole group discussion and small group acting.
o The only instructional aides were books read at the beginning of the lesson as
examples of how to resolve conflict peacefully in the classroom. These books
gave students examples of positive behavior prior to their interactions with their
peers.
Morgan Chambers
o The students were actively engaged in the lesson as they acted out with their peers
scenarios of how to bring peace to the classroom.
o The information was given logically where the students expressed their ideas,
examples of behavior were given, and then students were able to practice through
role play.
o The students used their ideas of peace to help them be successful with the lesson
as well as referring to the books read at the beginning of the lesson.
o This lesson related to the students because they were able to act out real life
scenarios that take place in the classroom every day. This lesson was implemented
so that they would start to handle conflicts in a peaceful manner.
o As the lesson was used to decrease behavior problems, behavior implications
were not needed during the lesson.
o My interactions with the students was fair and involving, I worked with the
students acting out scenarios and every student had the opportunity to be actively
involved in the lesson
Professional Development
o One goal I have for myself in the classroom is to promote a more peaceful
environment in all aspect. As part of the Montessori curriculum, the peace table
and peace education are part of the practical life area of the classroom. I feel that
to gain a broader understanding of how to implement peace into the classroom it
would be beneficial to observe other Montessori classroom as well as to
collaborate with others in the Montessori field as to how to promote peace in the
most beneficial way for the students.
o Another goal I have for myself is to implement more lesson where the students act
out roles and learn through that acting. Through this lesson I found that the
students really enjoyed the interaction and their knowledge substantially grew
because of it. Due to this I would like to implement more lesson like this and to
do this I feel that it would be beneficial to attend workshop on literacy
characteristics where this type of learning is discussed. I feel that it would also be
beneficial to collaborate with colleagues from various grade levels to see how
they implement this type of learning into their classrooms and if they have any
ideas on how to promote this type of learning further.
