Theme: La llorona. Mexican folk story. School literacy goals.


Standards:
B.4. Reading: Students will comprehend the main idea of selected, short authentic
written materials
D.2. Cultural activities: Students will participate in and learn about age-appropriate
cultural activities (such as games, songs, and holiday celebrations)

Goals/Objectives:
Students will use vocabulary words to create logical predictions before they read.
Students will make connections between the target language and English through
listening to both languages read aloud.
Materials:
La llorona story packet
Prediction/ definitions sheet
Procedures:
Introduction: The last class, we went over 14 vocabulary words from the story of La llorona
(The Weeping Woman), which is a popular Mexican folk tale. We discussed what a folk story is
and how they are stories told from generation to generation and usually convey a piece of
wisdom. The students mentioned American folk stories they had heard and we discussed the
reasons why each story was told and how there are many different versions of each. The story
will be told to expose the students to different cultures and allow them to see what life is like as
a child growing up in Mexico. The students started their predictions the last class period and
will resume writing them today.
Before Class: Before class the desks need to be arranged into groups of four.
Body: Note: Give est. time for EACH activity
Warm-up:

Como estas? (How are you?) discuss the meaning of the phrase and
possible responses use call and response along with TPR (Whole class and
then with group)
