MEASURING INSTRUMENTS

Instruments for Determining Various Quantities such

as:

Current, Length, Light Intensity, Mass,

P.H., Speed, Temperature, Time,
Voltage and Volume.
Current:

Temperature:
Temperature: physical quantity corresponding to the level of
heat or cold, which is measured by means of a thermometer.
Instruments Include: thermometer, clinical thermometer, bimetallic thermometer.

Measure of

Time:

Time: physical quantity corresponding to a phenomenon or an

event that is measured with devices such as watches and
stopwatches.
Chronometer: A piece of equipment that measures time
accurately

Instruments Used for Measuring Time include the stopwatch,

sundial, mechanical watch, analogue watch, digital watch,
grandfather clock, weight-driven clock mechanism.
In the past, a common time measuring instrument was the
sundial. Today, the usual measuring instruments for time are
clocks and watches. For highly accurate measurement of time
an atomic clock is used.

Mass: Mass is a measurement of the amount of matter

something contains. Mass is measured by using a balance
comparing a known amount of matter to an unknown amount
of matter. The Mass of an object doesn't change when an
object's location changes.
A triple-beam balance gets its name because it has three
beams that allow you to move known masses along the beam.

BUT:
Weight: Weight is the measurement of the pull of gravity on
an object. Weight changes with location. It is the physical
quantity that characterizes an amount of matter (mass) that is
measured by means of a scale.

A scale is a general term that refers to any device that is used
to measure mass.

Volume: Volume is the amount of space an object occupies.

Use a pycnometer, for very accurate volume measurements of
fluids.
Volumes of liquids are measured in a graduated cylinder.
Volume of irregular solids is measured by water displacement
using a graduated cylinder, unless it is water soluble. Volume of
regular shaped objects is measured by measuring their sides
with a ruler and using the appropriate formula. Pipettes are
used for small volumes. Graduated cylinders, pipettes, burets,
syringes, volumetric flasks, beakers examples of instruments
used to measure volume.

Length: One instrument that is used to measure length is a

tape measure or a ruler. You can also use a yard stick, scale or
meter stick.
