My younger brother is born.

1995

First protease inhibitor is approved, starting


a new era of HAART.
President Clinton starts Presidential
Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS
First guidelines for the prevention of
opportunistic infections in persons infected
with HIV are issued by the CDC.
My entire family and I move to the United
States for better opportunities.

1996

The U.S. Congress reauthorizes the


Ryan White CARE Act.
HIV is no longer leading cuase of
death for all Americans ages 25044;
but remains the leading cause of
death for African Americans in this
age group.

1997

AIDS- related deaths in the U.S.


decline by ore than 40 percent
copared to the prior year because of
HAART
President Clinton announces his goal
of finding an effective vaccine in 10
years.

MDM Goals announced reversing
spread of HIV and AIDs, malaria and

2001

United Nations General Assembly


convenes first ever special session on

I attend my schools very first Sex
Education Program

2002

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tb,


and Malaria begins operations;
approves first round of grants later
this year.
HIV is leading cause of death
worldwide, among those aged 15-59
My parents almost opt me out for Sex
Education because of cultural reasons
where my parents dont believe I
need to be learning about sex at that
age.. However, my aunt talks to them

2003

President Bush announces PEPFAR


during the State of the Union
Addresss; a 15 billion dollar initative
to address HIV and AIDS, tb, malaria
3 by 5 initative announced by World
Health Organization to bring
treatment to 3 million people by

first to be held in Southeast Asia.

an additional 5 years at up to $48
billion; the legislation ends the
statutory HIV travel and immigration

President Obama launches the Global


Health Initiative (GHI), a six-year
effort to develop a comprehensive
approach to addressing global health
in low and middle income countries,
with PEPFAR as a core component.

for the first ever National HIV/AIDS
Strategy for the United States.
My younger brother is born.

2010

Removal of U.S. HIV travel and


immigration ban officially begins.
South African researchers announce
results of a clinical trial showing that
use of microbicide gel significantly
reduced risk of HIV infection among
sexually active women.
Im a Junior in high school and take a
college level biology class where we
briefly go over sexually transmitted
diseases

2011

June 5 marks 30 years since first AIDS


case reported.
U.S. government announces goal of
an AIDS-free generation, highlighted
in speeches by Secretary of State
Clinton and President Obama.
I graduate from highschool
I start my first year at George Mason
University
I take college level bio where we
conduct an ELISA experiment in lab

2012
The XIX International AIDS Conference is held in
Washington, DC, marking the first time the
conference has been held in the United States
since 1990.
U.S. FDA approves the use of Truvada
(emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) for
reducing the risk of HIV infection in uninfected
individuals at high risk, marking the first HIV
treatment to be approved for pre-exposure
prophylaxis (PrEP).
I take my first introduction to global health class
where we I realize for the first time the global
epidemic of HIV across the world
I still only know it as a problem mainly in South

2013

I start to develop a strong interest in infectious


diseases after taking Global Health
I start an internship with Population Services
International that does work with HIV populations in
developing countries around the world
I attend my very first Sexual Chocolate WAVES event
on campus
I go to the HIV fashion show
I start to see SHS and WAVES advertising about free
HIV testing

2014

I become a Peer Health educator for WAVES in the Fall


where I learn in depth about sexual health education and
HIV
I learn fro the first time how big of an issue it is in
Washington, DC
I attend the National Stigma Conference at Howard
I start realizing how big of a problem stigma is in HIV
I take my first social determinants of health class and
become interested in learning about the social, economic
and cultural factors surrounding the issue.
I do a presentation for the Leadership and Community

2014

I take BIO 301 to learn about the biology of HIV


I take GCH 450
I meet with multiple community partners that are doing
work around HIV in the Washington, Metro area
I start planning the HIV Spring Break trip and conducting
weekly meetings with my AB Group to educate them about
topics around HIV
I lead an Alternative Spring Break trip about HIV in DC in
the Spring
I develop a program plan to reduce the number of new HIV
cases within the Latino and Hispanic population in Fairfax,
