When learning self-defense, students should focus on:
Personal Safety
Decision Making
Trusting Instincts
How to recognize a good vs bad situation
Unit Goals and Objectives:

-Students will be able to compare and contrast between offensive and defensive moves and skills.
-Students will be able to properly execute and use movements 8 out of 10 times.
-Students will be able to perform and apply defensive and offensive techniques in response to the
movements of the attacker.

-Students will be able to demonstrate proper techniques with dominant and non dominant side.
Unit Summary:

This unit is designed for my students in my 9th grade physical education class. The unit will teach a variety
of attack and defensive moves/skills. Such moves or skills will be demonstrated by using the technique of
modeling. Modeling will occur by the teacher demonstrating the proper techniques of the skills, or by using
online videos that break down the skills or moves. Student will then have the opportunity to practice by
working together in pairs and each taking turns to perform the skill. Students will then be placed into
groups and they will be put into an attack situation in which they will have to get out of quickly and safely by
using the skills that have been learned throughout the unit. Students will use peer evaluation to help each
other identify and fix mistakes in their skills. Powerpoint lectures will be provided for students to
understand the importance of self-defense and to briefly read about each skill that will be introduced in the
unit.

Lesson Activities: Students will work in pairs.

Each pair will be assigned to either a reading or
a video. From such video or reading, students
are to create a concept map graphic organizer.
Such map needs to include a preparatory phase,
a force phase, and a follow through face of the
skill/technique.

Unit Resources:
Unit resources will allow students to expand their knowledge on self defense. Students will
have access to different reading and video. Videos are not very long, yet full of information that
will allow students to prepare for any assignments and even for the exam. Reading all provide
different information, yet all focus on self-defense.
Useful Websites:
The websites provided focus on information for kids, males/females, teens, and workouts. Such
websites give access to those students who are interested in being involved with something
regarding self-defense outside of class.
