1. INTRODUCTION

UCO Bank has their 2nd Head Office Building in Salt Lake, Kolkata(Head
Office-2) which is well designed architecture.

This building has IT infrastructure in place with all floors connected to

Department of Information Technology which is at 5th floor by CAT-6 LAN
cables.

Department of Information Technology (DIT) has planned a WLAN solution

for Head Office-2, which provides secure mobile networking, featuring
seamless mobility across the campus environment, strong encryption to
protect the network, and intuitive management for control of the wireless
environment. The UCO Bank Head Office-2 network connectivity includes
WLAN solutions across entire Head Office-2, security, manageability, and
seamless roaming.

The WLAN solution designed is to be a low cost, simple, efficient way to

extend Head Office-2 wired LAN infrastructure into the wireless environment.

1.1. Head Office-2 WLAN Requirements

• Mobility

• Total Security

• Integrated Management

• Flexible Architecture

1.2. Purpose of WLAN

An important requirement in the Next Generation WLAN of this day is the

ability to maintain one’s connectivity even on the move throughout the
campus. As people move throughout this large multi-wing, multi-storied
building, it becomes important to get connectivity at any and every given
location so that important data is available when you need it and needless
data unavailability issues can be averted.

The scope of this design basis is to identify the Wireless access points in
every floor, so that all the important areas where the Wireless connectivity is

required are covered and to design and implement a WLAN system at Head
Office-2.

1.3. Architecture

There are 5 floors in Head Office-2 namely 1st Floor, 2nd Floor (4TH FLOOR),
3rd Floor 4th Floor and 5th Floor. Every floor has two wings namely VIP Wing
(A-Wing) and Service Wing (B-Wing). All the 5 floors come under the scope
of Wireless LAN project. The plan is to provide authorized users with wireless
connection in every part of Head Office-2.

Previous Network Architecture diagram of Head Office-2 is given below:

1.4. WIRELESS LAN PLAN

The motive of the Wi-Fi Project is to provide authorized users with

wireless connection in every part of Head Office-2. The plan to achieve
the same is to fix number of wireless Access Points (A.P.s) in each
wing of every floor. There will be two cables (one extra for
redundancy) coming from main DIT Room to each A.P. The number of
A.P.s depends on the area to be covered under the wireless
connectivity.

2. FEASIBILITY STUDY

Feasibility study included:

2.1 Site Readiness

Site readiness included the identifications of the locations of access

points by which whole area can be covered under Wireless
connectivity. This required in depth site survey and measurement of
signal strength at various places to ensure the seamless connectivity.
The main challenge was to have the permission to carry out the testing
in the presence of all the high profile employees and customers. So,
the testing was carried out in the night time or on the holidays .

2.2 Civil Work Feasibility

As the Head Office-2 have very high end and expensive interior
architecture, the civil work required for fixing of access points and
cable laying was a challenge. Cable laying was done above the false
ceiling and in parallel to the air conditioner duct. Access points were
also fixed above the false ceiling and antennas were fixed on the false
ceiling.

2.3 Technical Feasibility

Technical requirements included the high end security, employee

profile based policy formation, integration with existing active
directory, centralized control, remote management, AAA security, etc.
Cisco based solution provided by Ontrack Systems Limited fulfilled all
the requirements.

2.4 Budget Feasibility

Total budget requirement was Rs. 70,000,00 approx. This budget was
the project was financed by UCO Bank. The budget was allocated to

8

Department of Information Technology(DIT) which carried out the

whole project.

3. PROJECT PLANNING

Project is divided the following phases

3.1. Site Survey

Detailed Site Survey with IMSG Team and R.C. electrical team to
identify the feasibility of A.P. installation and the cable laying from I.T.
Room to the A.P location.

3.2. A.P. Position Identification and Measurements

A.P. positions should be identify with feasibility aspects taken into

consideration and proper measurements should be taken to identify
the cable length required.
The floor wise plan of A.P. positioning and their coverage area are shown in
the diagrams below :

3.3 Pre-Installation Testing

Before installing the A.P.s and Antenna in identified locations pre-

installation testing should be carried out to check the wireless
coverage and the signal strength.

3.4 Cable Route Identification

Based on the site survey, the final cable laying routes should be
identified for each floor. This was done after taking feedback from
Head Office-2 administration head, Mr. Sudhir Sanjaliwala.

3.5 Civil Work

Civil work includes:

4.1. Pulling of cable from each wing IT room to the

A.P. locations. There will be two CAT-6 cables running
from IT room to A.P. location for each A.P.

4.2. Installation of brackets above the false ceiling

for the A.P. mounting.

4.3. Cut-out in the false ceiling for the antenna

mounting.

4.4. Proper termination of CAT-6 by RJ-45

connectors on both the ends.

4.5. Provisioning of A.P. Box for the location where

A.P. mounting on ceiling is not possible.

3.6 Configuration : Configuration includes

3.6.1 Configuration of A.P.s as per the required modes so

that the range and quality of signal from each A.P. is
good enough to cover the desired area. And A.P.s
should have redundancy so that the other A.P. can
take over in case one fails to provide seamless
wireless connectivity.

3.6.2 Configuration of PoE Switches.

3.6.3 Configuration of ACS Server and WLSE to ensure the

proper security so that only authorized persons can
access the wireless network. Proper access and
authentication policies should be designed as per the
user levels.

3.7 Post Installation Testing

After complete installation, the whole setup should be tested

thoroughly to ensure that there is no problem with the coverage,
signal strength, redundancy and the security polices. For this, the
feedback should be taken from technical team and the users. If there
is any issue, it should be rectifies as soon as possible and ensure that
it doesn’t happen in future.

3.8 Business Signoff

After ensuring that the whole setup is working properly, the following
things should be handed over to the R.C. technical team :

3.8.1 Technical Description Manuals of A.P., antenna, PoE

switches, ACS Server, WLSE.

3.8.2 Design Description documents for WLAN in R.C. It

includes :
