Brent Milfort
Autobiography
My name is Brent Milfort and I am 19 years old. I was born in Boston, MA
at Brigham and Women's Hospital. My moms name is Marjorie Langley and my
fathers name is Ludes Milfort. I have an older sister; her name is Christina
Langley. I also have an older brother on my fathers side. His name is Luckenson
Milfort. My parents split up soon after I was born. On the weekends, I visit my
father.
Growing up, I was always told to take my education seriously. This helped
me understand the importance of education. Although I was taught this valuable
information, I did not take learning seriously. In middle school, I would
procrastinate with my homework and I barely paid attention in class. My teachers
would constantly have to redirect me during the lessons. As I became more
mature, my difficulty focusing slowly faded away. I started doing my homework

more consistently. As soon as my academics improved, my social issues hit a

peak.
I got into a fight with one of the upper classmen at my school. The fight left
me with a bloody nose. My mom felt that the school was not safe enough for me;
so I transferred from the Loomberg Middle School to the Wilson Middle School
within the same school year. Ironically, the middle school she transferred me to
was worse than my previous school. At the Wilson, I was involved in even more
fights because of a rivalry between my old middle school and my new middle
school. As a result of all of the conflict, I completed less schoolwork. I was
suspended plenty of times and received poor report cards. This was the norm until
my sophomore year of high school. At that point, I realized I needed a smaller
school. I was referred to Greater Egleston High School by a staff member at the
BPS Resource Center in Dorchester. Everything changed when I transferred to
Greater Egleston High School.
Greater Egleston High School is not your traditional high school. When I
got here, it was really an eye opener about how serious I should take my education.
I was not aware of my Grade Point Average until I started attending Greater
Egleston High School. At the beginning of each school year, all students are
required to calculate their GPAs. This was the first time that I realized the impact

of my poor grades on my future plans. I wish someone had explained the

correlation between grades and GPA to me in middle school.
Although I became more aware of my educational status, I still lacked
maturity. I did not take the consequences of my actions into consideration nor did
I consider my teachers perceptions of me. My lack of maturity was brought to my
attention by Ms. Coles, the Headmaster. One day, the Headmaster told me that if I
did not change the way I thought or acted, my seat at Greater Egleston High
School would be in jeopardy. After she said that, I started to change my outlook on
life. I thought about my future and the man I wanted to be in my community.
I worked hard to turn my academic performance around in order to be
accepted into college. Despite all of the obstacles I have faced in my educational
journey, I am excited about the next step in my path. I will be studying Graphic
Design at Newbury College starting in September. I was awarded the Night Hawk
Scholarship by Newbury College. Now, I can see myself as a young man studying
hard in college and working toward accomplishing my goal of graduating from
college with a Bachelor Degree in Art.
