Inequality is a major issue within society that has existed as far back
as history can possibly go. Its inequality between races, religions, genders,
ethnicities, and pretty well any stereotype. Equality needs to be spread
among all no matter what shape, size, color, gender, beliefs, or any other
characteristic that person has. A push for equality has been focused on for
years, and one of them is for equality among genders.
In todays society, there are ideals and stereotypes of both men and
women that are harshly implemented even though many do not realize the
influences they are surrounded by. Women more so than men are faced with
inequalities, sexism, and objectivism. But all in all, both genders are issued
roles and what they should do or how they should act. Typically women are
seen as the weaker sex, given the nurturing duties, women have to have a
tone and curvy body, and give men just the things they desire. As for men,
society shows that they have to be strong, they have to be domineering, that
its womanly to show emotion, they are the ones that support the family,
and they have to have that muscular, fit body. Commercials or any type of ad
does an excellent job implicating these ideas, these stereotypes. In a world
where everyone is assigned and told what they should do, how to act, what
to wear, and what they should expect is why these roles and ideals still
exist. Women are paid less, more women are homeless, they are more likely
to be abused, and be seen as nothing more than that woman instead of
that person. This is a major societal issue that needs to be resolved for both
women and men, but the major key for a change is for both sexes to stand
together.
The element to remember about the cause of theses stereotypes is the
constant reminder of the idea that they exist and need to exist. A great
example for objectifying women is the well-known Hooters. Women are more
than just lady parts and someone to cook dinner; they are more than just
hormonal, rampaging women on their scheduled cycle. It is true, women
have mood swings or get upset at seemingly minor occurrences at times, but
the major flaw in that statement is the simple fact that men, too, participate
in the same behavior. Why is it that its okay for a man to walk around
shirtless, but heaven forbid a womens bra strap is visible? Or that her
underwear lines are visible because guys do not have their boxers showing
or anything at times. The issue lies within the simple fact that it should not
even matter for both men and women if a piece of clothing is showing, what
they happen to be wearing, or if either shows any emotion. Men and women
are both living and breathing human beings; everyone is their own person,
their own self, and each an individual with unique characteristics.
Over the years, there has always been progress and a gravitation
towards equality, but there is still a lot of work for the dream of equality.
Recently, there have been commercials and organizations broadcasting for
womens equality (as well as men). One person can make a difference in the
world, but a population can change the world. To change the societys means
Currently, there are many (both men and women) standing up for equality
for women and destroying the idea of gender roles. An example of part of
this movement would be at the infamous red carpet event with the
#askhermore promotion. Typically women are judged based on their attire
versus what they are truly there for their work; however, this year there
was a major shift into discussing their work rather than their fashion. More of
these #askhermore events need to be broadcasted, emphasized, and
promoted to push the change of equality for all. Motivating these brilliant,
inspiring, well-known artist of all sorts to support the movement for equality
will enable society to come together and make the change in disowning
inequality. One individual can make a difference, but a population can
change the world.
