Totalitarianism Compare and Contrast Essay

From 1917 to 1933 totalitarian governments began to take control of some European
countries. Totalitarianism is used by some political scientists to describe a political system in
which they state holds total authority over the society and seeks to control all aspects of public
and private life wherever possible. Two examples of totalitarianism governments are fascism and
communism. Countries that became totalitarian were Germany, Russia, and Italy. Two events that
led to the rise of totalitarianism was the Treaty of Versailles and The Great Depression. Although
communism and fascism were a very familiar combination so was totalitarianism and
communism.
Like a totalitarian government a communist government had very strict rules for their
followers. Karl Marx was the leader and advocated a class war in which all private property was
publically owned. Communism was derived from Karl Marx who originated from Germany. his
beliefs were that each person was too work and get paid according to their abilities and needs.
Some ideas that defined communism were no private property, a classless society, and the
elimination of religion. Fascism and communism had some similarities but they both related to
totalitarianism.
Both Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini believed in their own kind of government. One
believed in a fascist government while the other believed in a totalitarian which controlled
everything that the people who followed did. Fascism was somewhat similar to a totalitarian
government, but with less restrictions to the people. Some ideas that define a fascist government

were that there was use of youth groups, there was a need to wear special uniforms, and private
property was okay to have. Although a totalitarian government shared some similarities with a
fascist government, communism and fascism were much alike with very similar restrictions.
Communism and fascism had similarities like with a totalitarian government. The
ideologies of these groups are very similar to one another. Both government groups did not
require individual rights to their people, and had restrictions to the freedom of press and speech
of their followers. Their government party was a one party rule that was run by dictators. Both
groups also shared the same idea that they would glorify war and military. Although all these
government groups had distinctive similarities and differences I majorly leaned toward a
communist rule.
A communist government is fairly strict with its followers, but had less restrictions to the
people as a totalitarian government rule. My life under a communist government would be
drastically different because I would have to work for myself and be paid according to skill and
needs. Private property would no longer be allowed as it would belong to the public and
government. Living life as a communist follower would mean that the use of religion would be
eliminated as the only so called god to believe in would be the dictator ruling the people. The
society would also be considered classless. A communist government has some similarities to a
fascist and totalitarian government, but at the same time they are all very different in their own
way. The people who follow these government related groups may have different and distinctive
restrictions because it is fairly strict with a belief in a religion.
