Science Period 3
Physical Science
Physical Science makes up everything in this world that is inanimate. Physical
science is the study of what things are made of and how things change. Physical science
combines the two sciences: chemistry and physics. Chemistry is the study of structure and
properties of matter. Physics focuses on energy and its ability to change matter. The topics I
have knowledge are properties of matter, motion and forces, velocity, chemical reactions,
density and buoyancy, astronomy, periodic table, elements, and structures of atom. Physical
Science is important in our lives because mostly everything in our life consists of physical
science. If it wasnt for physical science there will be nothing, but living beings in this world.
There will be no matter, so solids, liquids, gases, plasma, colloids, and BEC will not exist in
this world. Speed and acceleration will cease to exist in this world. Any car or vehicle in this
world will not move anymore because they have no acceleration or speed. Since there will be
no motion, it will look as if everyone froze in time. Light will cease to exist in this world
because the sun, moon, star, galaxy, Milky Way, and the universe will not exist anymore. We
will have nowhere to live, in the dark, motionless and nothing left in this world. I applied
Physical Science in my life by applying buoyancy and density by swimming, forces by
moving objects, reference point by moving from place to place, and solids, liquids, and gases
by having everyday materials.
Have you ever moved from one destination point to another destination point?
Without even realizing you are applying the principles of reference point, distance, and
displacement. Reference point is you point of origin, or in other words the location you
originally start in. To get to your destination you need a set of directions. The length you
traveled including that set of directions is called distance. Displacement however is the direct
opposite or different. Displacement is the length it took you from your reference point to your
destination in a straight line excluding direction. Without a reference point you cant find
speed, because speed involves a distance and you need a reference point and a destination to
measure the distance. Without reference point you have no motion. Every person starts in a
reference point and then move to where you have to go, your destination. Without a starting
point you dont know where to start. These are examples of how reference point applies a part
of me in my life. Reference point applies to my life whenever I go somewhere to somewhere.
For example, whenever I got to school I need a set of directions and a destination. In this
case, the reference point is my house and I need a set of reference directions to reach my
destination, Rise Kohyang Middle School. We apply reference point in our life even when we
are in school. When we move from class to class, our previous period is our reference point
and your current period is your destination. You need a set of directions to cross the hallway
and to your destination. In PE we apply the principles of motion. We go from our classroom,
the reference point to Shatto Park, our destination. You can calculate your distance by
figuring out the speed and time it took you. You have to remember there is always a distance

between your reference point and your destination.

Imagine yourself swimming in a grand, luxurious pool in a mansion. Every time you
swim you are applying the principles of density and buoyancy. Buoyancy is a force that acts
in the upward direction, opposing gravity. There are three types of buoyancy which are all
very different. The three types are neutral buoyancy, positive buoyancy, and negative
buoyancy. Positive buoyancy results in you floating, while negative buoyancy has a direct
opposite result and makes you sink. On the other hand, neutral buoyancy doesnt make you
sink or float. Density is how tightly packed the molecules are in an object. If your density is
higher than water then you will sink, but if your density is lower than the water you will float.
These are real-life examples of how density and buoyancy play a role in my life. One way
buoyancy applies to my life is when I swim. I dont know how to swim, so I go out to swim
once a year or two. When Im in the swimming pool I know whether I will float or sink in the
deep area. When I hold my breath I know I will float because of positive buoyancy, which
means that my buoyant force is stronger than gravity. When I breathe during the deep areas I
know I will sink because of negative buoyancy, which means that the buoyant force is weaker
than the gravity. When you go fishing, you go there to fish, fish. When you see a fish
swimming, it doesnt float or sink. This is because a fish has neutral buoyancy. The fish
neither floats or sinks and stays in the water. This means the buoyant force is the same as the
pressure of gravity. When I do my dishes the dishes sink not float on water. This means that
the dish has a higher density than water.(1.0) Think about density and buoyancy when you do
simple tasks like this.
Did you know that you need greater force to move objects with a high mass? A force
is a push or pull to any object. You require force to move any object that is inanimate or
animate. Once an object is in motion it doesnt stop unless acted upon by an unbalanced
force. Its the same for if an object is at rest it wont move unless acted upon by an
unbalanced force. Mass is a property used for describing and measuring matter. We use
newton as the SI unit for force. One pound of force is equivalent to 4.448 newton. The net
force in general is a combination of all the forces put together. Forces apply with everything
in life. If you want motion you need force. To move you need to force your foot back and
forth so that you can keep walking continuously without stopping. For there to be speed you
always need force. To speed up you need force because the more force you put in you foot to
step on the pedal the faster you go. This also applies to acceleration because to accelerate all
of a sudden, means that there was a strong and steady force that make you go up to 50 miles
from 20 miles per hour. You also need force in buoyancy. In buoyancy the gravitys force
must be stronger than the buoyant force for you to sink. For you to float you buoyant force
must be stronger than the gravitys force. These are examples in my life of how force plays a
role in my life. Force is applied in my life when I do numerous number of things. When I eat
I need force. I need to push the chair in and pull the side dishes to me. I need force to lift up
the spoon and put it in my mouth.. When I move the moving men use force to move the
objects. We both know that for objects with greater mass you require more force. Next time
you move objects, remember to put more force into objects with a greater mass.

Did you know that everything in life is either a solid, liquid, or a gas? These three are
3 of the 6 states of matter. The molecular motion of these three matter: solids, liquids, or
gases are very different, but similar. Solids are tightly packed together and can only vibrate in
place to move. They have a strong attractive force and are hard and brittle. Their particles
move slowly, but the strong force between the particles hold their shape. Liquids are mostly
all fluid. Since they are a fluid they have no shape. They have a weaker attractive force than
solids, but stronger than gases. The distance between the particles has increased. Their
particles move faster and can slip past each other. Gases are different from both liquids and
gases. Gases are always around you. Gases have neither volume nor smell. If a gas has a
scent, you will be able to smell it before you see it. They have a very weak attractive force.
The distance between the particles is much farther apart than those of a liquid. Gases are
independent and collide frequently. The other three states of matter are colloids, plasma, and
BEC. Colloids are in between liquid and solids, so it can be both a liquid and a semi-solid,
but not a full solid. Plasma is electrically charged gas and its particle move faster than gas.
BECs atoms are closer and less energetic than those of a solid. The particles in a BEC move
minimally or not at all. The actual definition of temperature is not how hot or cold something
is, but the measure of kinetic energy (movement) in a substance. To have speed you need the
states of matter. To have speed you need an object. Most likely that object will be a solid, one
of the three matters. The periodic table relates to these three matters. The periodic table is
made of solids. Gases, and non-metals. The farthest right side is the Noble Gases which is 1
of the three matters. Most of the periodic table consists of metals which are solids. To have
astronomy you need solid or a gas. In space the Kuiper Belt, the asteroids, comets, and rocks
are all solids. Some of the planets like Jupiter are just a ball of gas put together. The sun is a
big ball of fire and it radiates plasma. The star is just a hot, big ball of gas that consists of
mostly hydrogen. The moon is both a solid and a liquid. The moons inner core is a solid
while the outer layer is a mushy liquid. These are how the three states of matter play a piece
of my heart. Solids, liquids, and gases contribute to my life because everything around me is
matter. The water, juice, and soda we drink are part of the liquid family. The airs we breathe
in and out are part of the gas family and all hard and brittle stuff around you is a solid. Next
time you walk around; try to identify which materials are which types of matter.
In conclusion, you need physical science in your life. I applied physical science in
my life by swimming for density and buoyancy, moving objects for forces, moving from a
destination to my destination using directions for reference point, and everything in life for
solids, liquids, and gases. Physical Science is important because that is what makes up most
of this world or the Earth. Without Physical Science there will be no speed or acceleration in
any moving object. There wont even be motion if there isnt Physical Science. Physical
Science consists of matter, so there will be nothing left in this world. Astronomy is also part
of physical science, so there wont be the galaxy or the universe. I applied density and
buoyancy in my life through swimming, reference point when I move from a destination to
another destination, force when I move objects of any size or weight, matter when Im alive
because everything around me is matter. Now that you know this information when you do
your daily or once in a while activities think about what principles of physical science apply

to your activity.
