Reflection #5: Religious Freedom
Religion is a topic that I am not so used to talking about, due to the fact that I
am agnostic when it comes to religion. Being in a family where a lot of my close
relatives are very devout, I sometimes find myself simply trying to avoid them when
the topic comes up. I do pride myself of being very respectful towards my own
religion and others as well. It took me until I was in middle school when I finally met
others who had differing religions. In fact one of my closest friends has a differing
religion, and he is just like everyone else. However, my position on religious
freedom in school for example is in agreement with the Clinton and Bush
administration statements.
I agree that a teacher should not push their own religion onto the students,
as well separate or segregate students with different religions. Similar to politics,
where leaders cannot endorse any one religion, and also cannot ban the worship of
any religion. Also, I believe that students should preach their religion in class during
class hours. However, I agree that students should have the freedom to preach
whatever they want in a verified school club. For example, a bible studies group or a
Jewish club. Although overall I think that religion should stay out of public schools
completely, with of course the exception of private schools which practices religion.
